Fringe review: Songs From Life

Stefanie Rummel’s sparkling cabaret turns travel, memories and modern obsessions into a warm, witty evening of original music. ★★★

It’s potentially one of the cheeriest introductions to a cabaret performance in Adelaide when Stefanie Rummel, smattered in sparkles from head to toe, dashes on stage. Soulful and charming, the Australian premiere of Rummel’s show delivers exactly what’s on the tin: a joyous compilation of original songs, with inspirations spanning a lifetime.

Each seat has a postcard on it and Rummel explains the collection of locations on the cards represent the ethos of her performance. She believes the places, experiences and feelings we collect over life inform our art and, in turn, are some of the most precious things to look back upon and share. The ability to make this tangible for all those watching her in The Ballroom at Ayers House shows both the warmth in Rummel’s voice and the undeniable character of her craft. When she sings, she carries accounts of her time spent travelling, living and loving across the world in her voice. Yet, there’s room for everyone else’s experiences, too. A particularly fun (and meta) number even details the way our phone attachment has descended into something of a modern love affair.

In between songs, she poignantly explains that ‘when we think about something, it stays in our mind’. Those seeing her this season are sure to find this show is very much in that category.

Songs From Life is playing at The Ballroom in Ayers House from February 20 March 4
