Adelaide lights up this weekend as Illuminate Adelaide kicks off, and the state’s libraries are encouraging South Aussies to try something new with the Firstival program.

Illuminate Adelaide

July 1-19

One of Adelaide’s favourite winter festivals returns to light up the city this month. Illuminate Adelaide’s 2026 program includes 11 world premieres, 11 Adelaide exclusives and more than 100 experiences and performances celebrating light, art, music, technology and culinary discovery. Highlights include large-scale interactive Augmented Games at the Adelaide Showground, Night Visions in the Adelaide Botanic Garden and Universal Kingdom: Ice Age at the Adelaide Zoo. The crowd favourite, free City Lights display also returns extending into Rymill Park for the first time and featuring more than 50 interactive artworks, installations and roving performances.

Firstival

July 1-31

This month South Australia’s libraries come together to present a packed program promoting connection, discussion and moments of discovery. There is something on offer for all ages with more than 300 events offering the chance to find your next favourite hobby. Expect everything from sourdough bread making and wine tastings to speed dating and learning circus tricks. There is a first time for everything and Firstival is making it easier to have a go at something new all month long.

Festival Theatre Workshops

July 6-10 & 13

As a part of its school holiday program, Adelaide Festival Centre is hosting workshops designed to get young people involved on and off the stage. The five-day musical theatre intensive program is designed for young performers aged 10 to 17 ready to take their theatre skills to the next level. This fast-paced intensive builds technique, stage presence and confidence on the stage and kicks off next Monday.

The award-winning team behind The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child return to bring another childhood classic to the stage. The witch and her cat are on their broomstick when the witch’s hat, bow and wand are lost to a stormy wind. When a helpful dog, bird and frog find them, they all jump on for a ride. But this broomstick was not made for five. See what happens when the broom breaks in two and the witch comes face to face with a hungry dragon when Room on the Broom shows at Dunstan Playhouse.
