Royal Adelaide Show

Roll up, roll up for nine days of family fun as this fan highlight of the state’s event calendar returns this weekend. Among the staples are livestock, produce, cooking and craft competitions – the popular Night Shift also returns to deliver entertainment after the sun goes down. Expect the beloved fireworks displays, as well as the arrival of Hot Wheels and a jaw-dropping human cannonball performance by Guinness World Record holder David “The Bullet” Smith from the United States. This year The Show also celebrates 100 years of cookery competitions with another year of record-breaking entries.
River Torrens Running Festival

The River Torrens Running Festival with Race Hub Australia is on at the Drage Reserve in Felixstow, featuring the Physio Physique Half Marathon, 10 km, 5 km, and 2 km Family Dash – each showcasing stunning views of the River Torrens every step of the way. The River Torrens Running Festival offers fast, flat courses along the river, making it ideal for chasing a personal best or enjoying a relaxed winter jog with friends as you cruise toward the finish line. Salon Des Refusés

This touring exhibition, presented by Sydney’s S.H. Ervin Gallery, displays more than 50 remarkable works exclusively at David Roche Gallery. Known as the popular alternative to the Archibald Prize and the Wynne Prize Salon Des Refuses features portraits and landscapes recognised for their quality, diversity and experimentation, but were not selected for the Art Gallery of New South Wales’s esteemed exhibitions. These works offer insight into contemporary art practices, different approaches to portraiture and responses to the landscape.
Pull Pop Push
Until January 24
Explore the art of movable books in this visually-engaging and interactive experience presented by the State Library of South Australia. From pop-ups to sound books and more, the State Library draws on its collections, including the Children’s Literature Research Collection, to show how these books use carefully engineered paper mechanisms to transform flat pages into lively scenes. Step through immersive, larger-than-life recreations of iconic words and explore the evolution of paper on the ground floor of the Spence Wing in the State Library.

A Brush With Art
September 5 to October 11
Take the scenic route and discover South Australia’s backyard at a slower pace. Now in its 22nd year, A Brush With Art is one of the region’s longest-running creative and cultural events. Across five weeks discover the regional arts and tourism trail that encompasses participating towns, galleries, artists, exhibitions, workshops, creative venues and local businesses through the Flinders Ranges, Southern Flinders Ranges and fringes of Outback South Australia. Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition
From August 29
Returning for its 23rd year, this prestigious contest is showcasing the best nature photography from across the globe. More than 2000 entries from 501 photographers from 17 countries have been distilled down to the best 100 by this year’s judges: specialist landscape and aerial photographer Mieke Boynton, the exhibition’s 2025 winner Ross Gidgeon and multi award-winning nature photographer Jake Wilton.
Patience and Penitentia
Until September 18
South Australian artist Ida Sophia’s installation and performance work Patience and Penitentia confronts silence and estrangement as corrosive cultural practices. As a part of the 2026 SALA Festival, the work focuses on the ‘silent treatment’ and turns the usually hidden form of punishment into a public display inviting conversation and seeking to break cycles. Following the artist’s 40-day durational performance, which finished at the end of August, the purpose-built instillation remains on display until Friday, September 18 at Samstag Museum of Art.
