Jazz legend James Morrison will be joined by his big band for a tribute to jazz maestro Duke Ellington, to mark 50 years since his passing. Simply known as Duke, the 20th-century pianist, jazz composer and bandleader pioneered the big band style of music. This performance will include much-loved standards from the Duke’s repertoire, including Take the A Train, In A Sentimental Mood, Caravan and It Don’t Mean a Thing (It Ain’t Got That Swing). Described as a “genius of jazz”, James Morrison will be accompanied by multi-award-winning vocalist Nina Ferro and a big band of jazz musicians from around the country. This performance by James Morrison and his Big Band takes place at Her Majesty’s Theatre on November 22.
Following his 2023 sell-out exhibition, The Return, which marked his re-entry into the SA market, Australian painter and printmaker Leon Pericles returns with his latest exhibition, The Revival: Tiggy Puggenheim – The Return of the Artworld’s Top Dog, which focuses on Pericles’s parody vernissage. Leon Pericles grew up in the Australian outback a setting he constantly returns to in his work, as depicted in the imaginary town of Widjimorphup. The Western Australian artist works in diverse media, ranging from painting to printmaking, sculpture, design and kitmaking. He has held 160 solo both nationally and internationally over the past 50 years, with works in both public and private collections. The Revival is showing at Ex Animo Art in Hyde Park from November 22 until December 14.
Artist Carlos Barrios remembers growing up in El Salvador, with his loyal German Shepherd Tonatiu providing much-needed companionship as a civil war raged on in the background. Carlos will pay homage to our animal cousins in his exhibition Todos los Animales – All The Animals, an installation of his painting and ceramics at BMG Art from November 29 to December 21. “Most of us have been touched in certain moments of our lives by a creature of the animal kind, furry, scaly or feathered, from the air or water, from the land or mystic realms,” says Carlos.
When a loved one passes, it can be difficult to know how to honour them. Centennial Park is now offering a sustainable memorial option at its Living Legacy Forever Flowers Garden. This first-of-its-kind in South Australia allows you to spread the ashes of your loved one in the garden, helping it grow and positively impacting the garden. This November 30, the Living Legacy Forever Flowers will hold an open garden, with the Memorial team onsite between 10am and noon to answer your questions.
