Join the fight against childhood cancer at the fifth Gold Ribbon Gala. Don your fanciest mask with this year’s theme of Masquerade Ball. For $240 per person (with tables of 10 also available), this special night includes a three-course meal and a five-hour drink package. There will also be a live auction, a dance floor and a silent auction, with proceeds from the night supporting the Childhood Cancer Association, which provides practical, hands-on support to children with cancer, and their families. The Gold Ribbon Gala takes place at the Adelaide Convention Centre this Saturday, August 9 from 6.30pm.
Half a century ago, George Lucas forever changed Hollywood cinema with the premiere of his blockbuster movie, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. This month, audiences can experience the legendary film like never before. Conductor Nicholas Buc will lead the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as it recreates John Williams’ iconic score live while the entire movie plays in the background. Follow the young Luke Skywalker as he embarks on a daring mission to save Princess Leia from the evil Darth Vader. Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert will be performed at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on August 9 at 7pm.
Head to BMG Art on Halifax Street this weekend for a joint exhibition featuring oil on canvas by Mike Barr and Don Rankin. Mike’s installation is titled Reflections of a City and features slice-of-life paintings depicting the streets of Adelaide on a rainy day. Meanwhile, Don’s section of the exhibition is called Positively Blooming and includes colourful still life paintings of flowers and fruit. This exhibition will be showing from Friday, August 8, until Saturday, August 30.
Celebrate our best friends as the Top Dog Film Festival returns to Adelaide this weekend as part of a nationwide tour. This pawsome movie marathon features a curated line-up of short films recognising the unique connection between humans and our four-legged companions. A highlight will be the screening of Canine Concierge, which shows the lives of hotel dogs from around the world, including stars Archie the Labrador from Tasmania, London’s dapper Dash and a snow-loving snooch from Canada. This film festival will be shown at the Capri Theatre in Goodwood from 2pm on Saturday, August 9.
Imaginations will run wild as Wonderverse tours regional South Australia throughout August. Children can recreate their own musical pieces with help from Elisha Umuhuri from DEM MOB hip-hop group, or explore various interactive environments. This immersive experience was commissioned by the University of Adelaide for its 150th anniversary celebrations and co-designed with Patch Theatre. Wonderverse will be held at Middleback Arts Centre in Whyalla on August 14, followed by sessions at Chaffey Theatre in Renmark on August 21 and Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in Mount Gambier on August 28.
To celebrate the 2025 SALA Festival, the History Trust of South Australia will host South Australia’s Arts & Crafts as part of its popular Talking History series. Meet South Australian artists and artisans who practice “hands-on history” by blowing glass, running a shuttle through looms, or transforming liquid meal. South Australia’s History Advocate, Dr Kiera Lindsey, will chair a panel featuring sculptor Meliesa Judge, academic Alison Giles and Dr Louise Bird from Heritage South Australia. This event takes place at the Hetzel Lecture Theatre at the State Library of South Australia at 5.30pm on Tuesday, August 12.
