This weekend, travel back in time for SA Museum’s VikingFest or head to Dunstan Playhouse for Shake & Stir Theatre Co’s production of 1984.

SA Museum’s VikingFest

Travel back in time this weekend for VikingFest. This fair includes free admission and takes place on June 28-29 from 10am-5pm on the front and back lawns of the South Australia Museum. Highlights include a medieval market, a tavern full of mead, a spit roast and a wooden longship. There will also be market stalls selling everything from medieval costumes to replica weaponry, as well as medieval combat exhibitions, axe throwing, medieval-themed music and entertainment, and a Viking beard competition. SA Museum’s current major exhibition, Treasures of the Viking Age: the Galloway Hoard, will be open throughout the event, while there will also be a LEGO trail and talks by South Australian archaeologists and historians inside the museum.

1984 at Dunstan Playhouse

The year is 1984 in the totalitarian state of Oceania, where Winston Smith is employed as a minor functionary, tasked with forever re-writing history to fit the ruling Party’s narrative. But Winston is a free thinker, and he’s in love – something the omnipresent Big Brother will not stand for. Based on George Orwell’s prescient warning against totalitarianism, this Shake & Stir Theatre Co production sees the acclaimed 1949 classic, 1984, transformed for the stage by Nelle Lee and Nick Skubij. This play stars Chloe Bayliss, Tony Cogin, Abhilash Kaimal, Steven Rooke, Michael Whalley and David Whitney and will be performed five times at Dunstan Playhouse until June 28.

Elton John orchestrated

The music of Elton John will fill Her Majesty’s Theatre on June 28 at 7pm for Rocket Man: Elton John Orchestrated. This concert will see Elton John’s music transformed by the Southern Cross Symphony, which will be accompanied by a nine-piece band. The performance will star virtuoso pianist and vocalist Brenton Foster alongside Sing It Live’s Shaun Holton. You can expect to hear Elton John’s greatest hits from across his career, including Tiny Dancer, Bennie and the Jets, I’m Still Standing, Your Song, Candle in the Wind, and, of course, Rocket Man.
