Did someone say fromage, red wine and French pastries? Immerse yourself in the best French food, wine and culture as Sydney’s iconic Bastille Festival arrives at Adelaide’s Festival Plaza from May 30 to June 1. France’s national day, Bastille Day, marks the storming of the Bastille prison by revolutionaries in search of weapons on July 14, 1789, considered a pivotal moment in the French Revolution. But you needn’t fear a baying mob at Adelaide’s 2025 festivities, which will feature some 30 food stalls, imported French wines, free cultural performances, market stalls and much more.
The best of the best will touch down in Adelaide this weekend for the Santos Wheelchair Rugby World Challenge – the world’s largest wheelchair rugby event in 2025. The Australian Steelers will take on Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Brazil and the Netherlands. In its inaugural year, this event sees Paralympic medallists return to home soil for the first time since 2018. The event takes place from May 29 to June 1 at Netball SA Stadium and runs alongside the Wheelchair Rugby National Championship and the newly introduced junior division.
Did you know that through their callosity patterns on their heads, each Southern right whale has their own unique fingerprint? The arrival of this incredible creature to Fleurieu Peninsula shores will once again be marked with Victor Harbor’s month-long Winter Whale Fest. This year’s festival draws inspiration from the Aboriginal dreamtime story of Kondoli, which tells how the whale brought fire to the Ngarrindjeri people. Among the highlights of this year’s festival is a lantern making project honouring Kondoli, the Water People group exhibition at Coral Street Art Space, the Welcoming of the Whales Ceremony, the Winter Whale Fest expo, science talks, nature and adventure activities and live music.
Australian botanical artist and illustrator Linda Cathlove was in the process of curating an exhibition when she sadly lost her long battle with cancer. This month, Linda’s life’s work will be honoured at a retrospective exhibition curated by her family. This installation will feature Linda’s finely detailed watercolours capturing Australia’s native flora, as well as the insects and birds inhabiting this environment. Linda also often included elements of fantasy in her paintings, with “faery folk” seen lounging on leaves or swinging from seed pods. A Whimsical Life – The Art of Linda Catchlove will be on display in the Adelaide Botanic Garden’s Museum of Economic Botany from May 31 to September 14.
