SALIFE Off the Beaten Track issue

Apr 02, 2026, updated Apr 02, 2026

Garner some inspiration for all the best places to visit around South Australia in this month’s issue of SALIFE, where we take you off the beaten track.

One of the best parts of this job is the opportunity to travel and meet interesting people while visiting new places around this wonderful state of ours.

This month, our Off the Beaten Track Issue, is dedicated to exploring your region of the state and beyond, from our abundant Fleurieu to the rugged Outback; the coastal serenity of the Eyre Peninsula to the hidden gems of the Limestone Coast, and everything in between.

For me, there’s nothing quite like venturing to a town you’ve never been to before and wandering down the main street in search of a quaint cafe or country pub.

Over the years, stories for this magazine have taken me to some unforgettable places. Making my way to the top of The Devil’s Peak in Quorn was a truly unreal experience. Eating an oyster while standing in the pristine waters of Coffin Bay, seconds after it was plucked from the sea, was another.

It’s difficult for words to do justice to the sensory beauty of falling asleep to the crashing waves of Kangaroo Island’s Hanson Bay with the door cracked open overnight at the Southern Ocean Lodge.

I have never experienced country hospitality as warm as I did arriving in Eyre Peninsula’s Kimba. Then, there was the impromptu swim in the waters of Robe after a morning spent exploring the dunes.

South Australia is truly a magical place, for all its food, wine, people and places, and this month, we discover a few more reasons why.

Senior journalist and photographer Ben Kelly has picked up his camera and ventured to the Outback to traverse it from the land and the sky for two special stories.

Ben took to the skies above Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre to photograph the natural phenomenon of the lake’s pink hue.

Then, he laced up for the Arkaba Walk, where he slept beneath the stars by night, traversing 45 kilometres of the Flinders Ranges by day.

Next time you find yourself cooking by fire, chef Kane Pollard has you covered. Kane’s compiled some campsite classics, elevated.

Features editor Genevieve Meegan went along to a very special dinner party in the Barossa Valley. Hosted at art gallery Wonderground Barossa, the night celebrated creativity, connection and community. Make sure you flip right to the end of the story, where you’ll find a recipe for a delectable salted caramel popcorn – I’ll be giving this one a go.

Fashion editor Emma Riemersma found herself at Inman Valley, where she embraced autumnal style in a very chic way at the beautiful Nest & Nature. We’ve truly hit layering season and we’re here for it.

We hope you enjoy this trip around SA as much as we did, and we’ll see you again next month for The Gardens Issue.
