Peek inside our May issue, where media personality and real estate agent Jade Robran shows us around her home, and we celebrate Mother’s Day with some special South Australian mums.
One of the traits I admire the most about some people is their ability to preserve through extreme adversity.
It’s something I admire immensely about Julia Winter, who sits down with features editor Genevieve Meegan this month.
Julia’s four-year-old son Luca died in unimaginable circumstances nearly 12 years ago, and today, she’s a shining light of hope for others who can’t see a way out of their own grief.
Julia sent us numerous photos of her lovely Luca and one in particular struck a chord with me. There he was, dressed in his navy raincoat, navy trackpants, furry trapper beanie and bright red gumboots.
The ground around Luca is wet with puddles and you can picture him jumping in them, sprays of water shooting up around him.
I pulled up an old photo in my phone’s gallery of my son at the same age in a near-identical outfit, on a puddle-jumping excursion of his own.
The similarities made me pause and think about the uncertainties of life – just how quickly the unexpected can happen.
At the time Julia lost little Luca, she was preparing to open a flower studio and they would chat about all the different flowers. The mother and son found a shard affinity for sunflowers, and so today, those happy, bright blooms represent Luca.
This brings us to a recurring theme that weaves through this month – our gardens.
They’re the spaces we entertain in, relax in and perhaps spend far too much time toiling in.
Media personality and real estate agent Jade Robran shows us around her home and garden, while chatting about her change of career and family life.
Adelaide Hills artist Stephen Trebilcock is inspired by the natural world around us when he sits down to create his textural paintings of flora and fauna.
If you’ve stayed at Mount Lofty House or Sequoia Lodge, you would have gazed at Stephen’s work – one of his paintings hangs in every accommodation room in both of the venues.
When I first came across the floral artistry of Keturah Louise from Baume Artful Blooms, I was truly wowed. Katurah creates layered sculptures with botanicals that are charmingly unexpected and just gorgeous.
This month, she hosts a spectacular dinner party in her Adelaide Hills garden. We might not all host with botanicals cascading down our dining tables, but Keturah has certainly inspired me to get that little bit more creative with centrepieces.
In May, we are, of course, celebrating Mother’s Day and we speak to three wonderful South Australian women about their experiences of motherhood.
London bombing survivor Gill Hicks remembers a particularly wonderful moment during the christening of her daughter Amélie. Her rescuers were there to witness the event and for Gill, it was a reminder of just how important their actions were that day.
“Motherhood for me, in that moment, became symbolic of the transformative power of their individual actions. By saving my life, this new life was possible,” Gill says.
We also speak with Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and author Hannah Kent, who share their own pearls of wisdom.
So, to all the mothers out there, we hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day, filled with moments that make memories.
