In My Gay Lady (formerly I, AmDram), Hannah Maxwell delivers a one-woman cabaret that feels both riotously entertaining and deeply personal. It’s an intelligent, sharply written exploration of queer identity, family and the winding road towards self-acceptance told with wit, warmth and a theatrical confidence that immediately pulls the audience into Maxwell’s world.

Her characterisation is exemplary. She commands the stage with a tightly controlled chaos and an infectious, positive energy that crackles like a slow burn through the room. One minute she’s razor-sharp and mischievous, the next she’s disarmingly vulnerable, guiding the audience through a life story that feels instantly relatable.

Vocally, Maxwell doesn’t just sing: she grabs the audience by the proverbial danglies and drags them straight into her metaphorical garden. It’s bold, theatrical, and gloriously unapologetic, landing with punch, humour and emotional clarity.

The writing is nothing short of brilliant too. Cleverly structured and beautifully paced, it balances camp wit with genuine emotional depth. At its core, My Gay Lady is a coming-out story that will resonate with anyone who has navigated the complexities of queer life. Maxwell’s reflections on family and identity create a rollercoaster of queer excellence that swings from laugh-out-loud comedy to moments capable of making even the most stoic audience member quietly reach for a tissue. And while the UK’s Welwyn Garden City might have a reputation as a slightly arid landscape for performance, this show is the exact opposite: lush, intelligent and bursting with life. Maxwell’s theatrical garden is in full bloom and this production deserves sell-out houses wherever it goes. Smart, heartfelt, and fiercely queer, My Gay Lady proves that sometimes the most powerful stories come from one performer, one stage and the courage to tell the truth with style.

Hannah Maxwell: My Gay Lady is playing at Holden Street Theatres from February 19 March 22
