Responding to SA wine mogul calls for mass vine pull, Barossa hotel set to rise soon

Why doesn’t anyone talk about Scomo, who destroyed our wine industry with just one sentence in 2020? The Chinese president went on the world stage and WARNED the US and Australian leaders that if anyone blamed China for the virus, he would put heavy tariffs on those countries.

Scomo almost immediately, as if he was ordered to do so, single-handedly blamed China within a few days.

In 2021, smack bang 200 per cent tariffs on lobster, prawns, wheat, meat, wine, etc.

Well, as we all know, it’s easy to find other markets for lobster, prawns, meat, etc., but not wine!

From 2010, we had a slow build of Chinese investors opening new markets for Australian wine, and by 2019 had reached an average of $900 per tonne.

It was incredible – we invested lots, increased our infrastructure, bought more properties, planted more varieties, and with one sentence, billions were wiped off our economy.

Today, thousands of families are losing their livelihoods, yet Scomo posts his great cooking on Facebook, enjoying his pension, when he should be tried for treason against his people! – Con Doupis

The slug is great, but really in the iconic Seppeltsfeld? What an eyesore. It is entirely in the wrong position. – Rory Champion

Responding to Call to keep motorcycle race off city streets

Moving the Moto GP to Tailem Bend just puts more money into a privateer’s pocket and takes out all the financial benefit for local city businesses. The financial benefit for Tailem Bend itself would be much less. There is very little appeal in after parties and money spent by the public in Tailem Bend compared to a city circuit. People who live in Tailem Bend choose to live there. People in Dunstan choose to live there. If they don’t like the situation, then move or shut up. – Steve Kidd

The Bend is an excellent track, with camping for bikers. We cannot all afford city accommodation. More trees are cut down, and possums, koalas and birds have no homes. Back off Labor show some sense! – Alex Terlaare

Responding to ‘Hurt, fatigue, disappointment’: SA’s Muslims respond as One Nation leaders descend for party launch

Cory Bernardi, when he sat in the Senate, was conspicuous by his ineffectiveness. Alas, as a Liberal so took the huff.

So, what’s changed now that he has sold himself to One Nation?

Meanwhile, the Liberals here in SA have gone distinctly extreme right thanks to the likes of Antic and Pasin.

So now you put a cigarette paper difference between the Libs and One Nation. They have a legitimate right to be worried. – David Anderson

So sorry to see and hear Australians listening to the rubbish spouting from the mouths of Hanson and her One Nation colleagues. This country has been a wonderful example of a multicultural society. To all our fellow Muslims and all other cultures and faiths, there are those who believe we are all one and the same. Take care and let there be peace. – Lynn Graham

I think the vast majority of the responsible mums and dads know that the Muslim communities are good communities; in order to display their ‘goodness’, they must proactively denounce the extremists in their communities. – Graeme Helen Adcock

Responding to Historic Kent Town pub to pour again, flanked by new housing towers

Truly banal architecture. Floor-to-ceiling windows soaking up the sun, minimal articulation or facade expression. Come on, Adelaide – surely, we can do better than this! – James Maude

Responding to No, that is definitely not a western pygmy possum’: New species alert in Yorke Peninsula

Wow! I know Dr Petit (also known as Topa). I was involved in the planning for the re-wilding of the park and became good friends with her.

As soon as I read the article, I knew firstly by the dates 2004 to 2011, I knew where the information came from because I had the privilege of returning the possums, after dark, and their weights and measurements taken, back into the area they came from. Such great memories. I love these little critters.

When I lived at Foul Bay, they bred on my property, so I made 3 different style nesting boxes for them and miss them so much.

Now I live south of Pt Rickaby and have some of the old nesting boxes still set up, but I know they are no longer this far north of the NP on YP.

Tiny birds, Pardalotes, breed in those boxes, so I`m still quite happy with those results.

I have collected so much info on them and some from Dr Petit, too. – Ann Williams

Responding to FOI shows Premier’s MotoGP meeting mission

Woohoo. Motorhead Mali does it again. This is going to boost our economy, not 20 per cent, not 70 per cent, not even 100 per cent; this is going to make billions, benefitting those who need it most – European motorsport, Malinauskas’s mates, etc.

So glad Adelaide’s reputation as an arts city is in tatters. We’ll get fewer of those types of annoying us with inane comments like “Wow, your city is so beautiful!”

Now Malinauskas can rip the entire Parklands up and give the CBD a permanent bitumen moat. That’ll bring in the punters!

And (bonus), we won’t have to waste money on an Indigenous cultural centre, because, well … boring. Come to think of it, all those tired old buildings there along North Terrace are really only using land we could lay bitumen on.

Stay informed, daily

Ooh – I’ve got a great marketing tag for Tourism SA… Come to Adelaide, it’s the pits.

Although, worryingly, there are suggestions of putting a street circuit around the old Holden plant in Elizabeth. Seems a bit weird to me. – Nick Patrick

Responding to Killer instinct: Did orcas force sharks to flee SA waters?

Great research. Always important to consider the causes of such events within the context of “usual” behavioural patterns and not leave interpretation to emotional responses only.

Maybe it also indicates that sharks’ small-sized brains include a very effective survival response! – Valerie Pudney

Responding to Labor pledges millions to combat homelessness in the city

Given the large amounts of money apparently being spent, why are there any homeless people?

$84 million would build a substantial number of houses or apartments.

Why pledge to renovate empty houses – why not just do it!

Why not follow the Finnish model? – John Clayton

Responding to Dismay as historic SA school house faces bulldozers

Yet there are three cottages round the corner in Maesbury Street, rebuilt from a worse condition.

They are now a blend of heritage street frontage and modern additions.

Back when the council cared for the unique built heritage of Kensington, and owners purchased with a feeling that the streetscape heritage was important.

One was after a protracted fight about intentional neglect.

One had its facade disassembled and remade stone by stone because it was essentially derelict.

And now they reassume their part of the story, sound and fit for purpose.

Extra protection, because once a property is demolished and replaced with a modern façade, the street starts looking like a rat with a gold tooth, and subsequent demolitions are inevitable. – Sue Carter

Responding to One Nation candidate following ‘ban’ the burqa site

At least SA Liberal leader Ashton Hurn is honest in revealing that her party has “held conversations with One Nation” about preference deals in the upcoming SA election.

Still, I think tying her party to Pauline Hanson’s divisive brand of politics is a mistake that will haunt the SA Liberals for years to come. – Carol Faulkner

Responding to ‘Unfair’: Complaints rise over multimillion-dollar Adelaide ticketing car

Perhaps the council should review the ticketless parking machines, too.

Introduced late 2023, I find that these machines are useless in our wonderful sunshine, especially when one wears prescription (and polarised) sunglasses.

The timing to enter details is far too short, especially when one is blinded by the sun reflected by the screen. A suggestion would be for UPark Plus card holders be able to use their cards to swipe their information, which would make the process more efficient.

Yes, I have written to the council outlining my experiences and, of course, no reply. – Paula Furlani
