It’s a double header celebration for car enthusiasts when McLaren Vale marks a different kind of vintage to the usual grape crush – this time showing off some sought-after wheels including a one of a kind classic MG sedan.

McLaren Vale is expected to be fuelled up with car fanatics on April 12 as the McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic rolls into its 20th anniversary.
Organisers are expecting thousands of spectators to a grand vehicle parade along McLaren Vale’s main road with the event also marking a special occasion for the MG Car Club of SA as it celebrates its 70th anniversary within a few days of the event.
“We had a big celebration for our 50th anniversary, and now we’re up to 70, so yeah, we’ve got a few celebration things happening through the year. The McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic happens to be two days after the actual anniversary date,” club member Ken Burke said.
“The highlight of the event is probably the parade, where we cruise down the street and have a little wave and a bit of a social get together with everyone as we do the cruise.”
Burke will be attending the event with his vehicle, a 1959 MG Magnette Series III sedan. It is the only one in South Australia, and one of only five in the country.
But he assure it won’t just be MGs on show, with other vehicles in the parade ranging from a 1915 Model T Ford Racer, a Riley Nine Tourer, a 1974 Excalibur Roadster, a Rolls Royce 25/30, and a Craig Lowndes Special Edition Commodore, along with modern luxury vehicles from Zagame including Lamborghini, McLaren and Ferrari.

Event chairman Nigel Williamson spoke about the positive impact the event has on the local area, saying the event can attract around 20,000 people.
“I think it’s a great, great event for the area, and involves a huge amount of people in local businesses, and it brings a car community together with the McLaren Vale and particularly the wine community.”
Mr Williamson urged people who were not necessarily classic car fanatics to join the event, saying you “don’t need a deep knowledge at all” to enjoy the vehicles on show. The night before Sunday’s parade, a kickoff party will take place at Chalk Hill, featuring a DJ, local food and wine, and a live auction.
“We’re trying to aim the Saturday night party at any of the entrants that want to come along, any of the locals in the area that want to come along, and anyone else that wants to come up from the city,” said Mr Burke.
