SA region gets its own Monopoly board
A picturesque South Australian region will soon feature in one of the world’s most popular board games, with locals asked to share favourite spots.
The natural wonders of Onkaparinga will be featured on a brand-new Monopoly board, launching in early 2027.
Louisa Grundy, who is putting together the board, is encouraging locals to help create the board by sharing their favourite locations, whether that be Sellicks Beach, Port Noarlunga or the “charming” township of Willunga.
“It’s a beautiful region in South Australia, and it had been a while since we’ve done a South Australia edition, and we like representing towns across the country,” Grundy, who works for Winning Moves, the manufacturer of the Onkaparinga Monopoly edition, said.
“It had been a while since we’d made a regional edition in South Australia – our last one was 10 years ago, and I think it was about time that Onkaparinga got its own one as the beautiful region that it is.
“From its stunning beaches and award-winning wineries to its local cafés, walking trails and community landmarks, we want to hear about the places that make Onkaparinga special.”
Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said, “It’s an honour for our spectacular part of the world to be featured on the world’s most iconic board game”.
“Onkaparinga is a huge and diverse region – home to about 10 per cent of the state’s population – and we take in suburbs as far afield as Sellicks Beach, part of Darlington, Lonsdale, Cherry Gardens, Willunga and part of Kuitpo along our border,” she said.
“That’s before you start talking about our 31 kilometres of iconic beaches, business centres, charming and historic townships, trails and reservoirs.
“We’re unique as the only place in Australia where stunning coastline meets an internationally recognised wine region within 40 minutes of a capital city.”
Grundy, who previously created boards for the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Ballarat, Busselton and Dubbo, said Winning Moves had received “a good few” nominations for Onkaparinga to have its own edition and that she has been in conversations with locals and businesses across the region, as well as the City of Onkaparinga.

She said they had already received “a lot” of nominations for Port Willunga, Onkaparinga National Park and the McLaren Vale wine region.
The custom edition will be available from major retailers in the Onkaparinga region and online for at least the next 10 to 15 years, with boards typically retailing for $69.95.
While Grundy would not rule out future SA-based Monopoly editions in the future, she said: “Onkaparinga will definitely have its moment upon its launch”.
According to Monopoly copyright holder Hasbro, the board game was first 1935 and has been played by more than one billion people globally.
