Fringe review: Peter Combe in Brush Your Hair With a Toothbrush

Adelaide’s resident children’s music legend mixes newer songs with his beloved classics in a cheerful Fringe show. ★★★

Peter Combe is back at the Fringe, bringing together both his beloved classics and his latest hits.

Combe is an Adelaide local who has been performing for Australian kids since the early 1980s. He kicks off with his newer releases, singing songs such as ‘10,000 Stars’ and ‘A Frog In My Cheese Sandwich’ before building up to his more recognisable numbers. Combe encourages children to sing along if they know the words; that’s harder to do with the newer songs so the energy and excitement grow towards the end when he plays his well-known and much-loved classics such as ‘Juicy Juicy Green Grass’ and ‘Wash Your Face In Orange Juice’.

These iconic songs have children singing and dancing along, while adults are transported back to their own school days. Recommended for ages 4+, a few younger children grew restless and left early, so perhaps it’s a better fit for slightly older kids. It may not have been a perfect show but when Peter Combe sings his silly songs, all the kids in the crowd, they like to do the same. Clicketty Cane!

Peter Combe in Brush Your Hair With a Toothbrush is playing at the Roundhouse at The Garden of Unearthly Delights from March 7 – 22
