In a prohibition-style cocktail bar complete with plunge pool and bathtub, Ecdysiast delivers a cheeky, high-energy celebration of burlesque. ★★★

Hosted at the fabulous Nineteen Ten, Adelaide’s glamorous, prohibition-era cocktail bar, get set to get wet n wild. With its own plunge-pool, bathtub and swing-set seating. Club Cartier: Ecdysiast explores the dizzy daydream that is burlesque.
Here’s a fun little ‘did you know’ moment. ‘Ecdysiast’ means to strip erotically (obvious, right?) and performers used to use the term when burlesque was outlawed back in the day. Banning burlesque? Sounds absurd? But approach with caution: catch Annie Laine on stage and you’ll understand why a great tease can be dangerously spellbinding. This five-foot blonde owns the stage and is the stand-out, her feathers practically an extension of herself.
And if feathers excite you, wait until you see the triple-act bathtub routine: do not slip when you go to pick up your jaw from the floor. Act after act delivers something totally tantalising, each performer showcases a brand-new repertoire of raunchy. At Club Cartier, the showgirls are noise-activated creatures: the louder you are, the cheekier they are. House rules we can all get behind. However the crowd might have enjoyed a moment to catch their breath rather than moving straight into promotions between acts, while the host could have benefited from a bit more rehearsal time to give the performers the plug they deserve. Club Cartier: Ecdysiast brings decadence, diamonds and a damn good time to the rooftop of Nineteen Ten, but you’ll need to be quick, it’s only here for three nights.
Club Cartier: Ecdysiast is playing at Nineteen Ten from February 12 – 15
