A burst of radiant, queer bubbliness, Phoebe Rodger’s debut show explores her journey discovering and embracing her sexuality. Through a mix of singing, dancing and storytelling, Rodger takes cabaret to the next level, destroying any social typecasting within the first two minutes.

She welcomes the audience into her wonderful, technicolour world of life and love, while remaining unabashedly herself. From an underwhelming first kiss to a moment of rebirth following an encounter with Australian theatre actress Courtney Monsma, Rodger weaves in palpable amounts of charm and wit as she expertly parades us through her life. Phoebs, You’re A Lesbian isn’t simply a coming out story: it is a raw and gut-wrenching letter to her younger self, one that beautifully peels back the layers of what it means to be gay today. Rodger shines a refreshing comedic light on some renowned women in history, exploring their sexual preferences and offering space for reflection. The final number strengthens the show’s emotional depth, grounding the room with velvet-glove truths, and displaying her passion and pride.

Among the messiness and palette of colours that is life, Rodger reminds us that our humanness is our commonality. All the stereotypes and social labels are nothing in comparison to who we are as people. As hilarious as she is genuine and tender, Rodger’s words hit home with a soft thud and a kind smile. An absolute gem that only shines brighter with each musical number, Phoebs, You’re A Lesbian makes for some damn good cabaret.

Phoebs, You’re a Lesbian is playing at The Mill from March 8 – March 21.
