Every true crime fanatic needs a favourite murderer, but Deb Robinson has 25 criminals whose names are always on her mind, the only women executed in Australia between 1789 and 1951. Bringing to life her new book, In Her Words, in an informative Adelaide Fringe show by the same name, Robinson seeks to preserve the once-forgotten history of convicted women.

Accompanied and assisted by her colleague and fellow true crime author Ash Tonkin, Robinson unravels the chain of executed women in Australia from the colony’s early days to the relatively recent abolition of execution. The show is dense with information about the “pinnacle of punishment”, but what would perhaps be better suited to a two-hour intensive lecture is instead a fast-paced talk that can run a little over one-hour.

In Her Words engages the human race’s long, morbid fascination with crime and death, with harsh themes and the extreme descriptions featured heavily throughout. That said, this is a great step into the world of Australia’s unlucky 25 and the Bloody Code.

In Her Words concluded at the Mess and Recreation Hall in Adelaide Gaol on March 15
