What’s on: Paul Kelly, Hugh Jackman, carols and raw art
This weekend’s line-up includes an emerging arts showcase, Merri Soul at Day on the Green, Carols by Candlelight, Hugh Jackman, That Dapper Market, fire spinning, a record fair and Moonlight Cinema.
Paul Kelly Presents the Merri Soul Sessions – Barossa
Tickets are still available for this Day on the Green show at Peter Lehmann Wines in the Barossa on Saturday. The Merri Soul Sessions features 10 musicians and performers led by Paul Kelly, with lead vocalists Dan Sultan, Clairy Browne, Kira Puru, Vika Bull and Linda Bull, all performing songs from the album Paul Kelly Presents the Merri Soul Sessions plus Kelly hits. Joining them will be special guests Lucinda Williams, Marlon Williams and Kasey Chambers.
Carols by Candlelight – Elder Park
Anthony Callea, Rhonda Burchmore, Nathaniel and Samantha Jade, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra are among the entertainment line-up for Carols by Candlelight on the banks of the River Torrens in Elder Park on Sunday. The park opens at 2pm, with kids’ entertainment, a screening of Home Alone (4pm), community carols (7pm), carols by candlelight (8pm) and fireworks (10pm). Details here.
Hugh Jackman – Adelaide Entertainment Centre
Actor and singer Hugh Jackman is in Adelaide with his arena concert show Broadway to Oz, based on the hit Broadway show Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway. It’s a journey through his life, showcasing successes such as The Boy From Oz and Les Miserable, with a nod to his X-Men character Wolverine thrown in for good measure. Jackson is supported by 150 musicians, singers and dancers, with tickets still available to the AEC performances tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night.
That Dapper Market – Bowden
You might like
Around 70 stalls selling vintage wares and funky design and craft items will converge on the warehouse at the corner of Fifth Street and Park Terrace in Bowden for That Dapper Market. There will also be food, a bar and live music. Doors open from 3pm-8pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.
Square Fire – Victoria Square
Fire spinners from around Australia will be putting on a free show in Victoria Square on Saturday. Entertainment starts at 3pm, with workshops, food trucks and the Plai Space, with the fire show beginning at 8.30pm and a “fire jam” at 9.30pm where those who know what they’re doing – and have their own fire gear – can join in. Uprising – RAW Adelaide
More than 30 South Australian emerging artists from the worlds of fashion, music, visual and performing arts will showcase their creative talents at this event tonight (Friday) at The Producers in Grenfell Street. Details of featured artists can be found here. It’s an 18-plus event and doors open at 7pm.
Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park
Upcoming screenings at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park include Steven Spielberg thriller Bridge of Spies (Friday), animated family film The Good Dinosaur (Saturday), space drama The Martian (Sunday), Burnt, Everest and Secret in Their Eyes. Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown. Full program online.
Record fair – Howling Owl
Second-hand disco, boogie, funk and soul records – “direct from New York City” – will be for sale at the Paradise Loft Records record fair at Howling Owl in Frome Street from 11am until 4pm on Saturday. There will also be food available from Top Rank BBQ.

The Screaming Jets – The Gov
Rock ’n’ Roll Rampage is being promoted as The Screaming Jets’ biggest national tour in more than a decade – and it’s touching down at the Governor Hindmarsh this Friday and Saturday. Next weekend at The Gov you can catch Absolutely Live: The Doors Show, celebrating the psychedelic era of the 1960s.
Hollywood Retro Film Festival
Twenty-two classic Hollywood films from the 1930s to the 1960s are being screened at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas as part of the Hollywood Retro Film Festival. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries costume exhibition
Close to 50 costumes created by award-winning costume designer Marion Boyce and featured in ABC TV’s third series of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries are on display in this exhibition at historic Ayres House Museum. Including themed rooms and interactive displays, the exhibition continues until February 14, 2016.
Tarnanthi art exhibitions
Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art exhibitions encompassing painting, sculpture, multi-media and other artforms continue at the Art Gallery of South Australia until January 17. Nganmarra – the Container of Life, at the Santos Museum of Economic Botany in the Botanic Gardens, is an installation of woven art by senior women artists from Bula’bula Arts in Ramingining, north-east Arnhem Land, which continues until January 31.
