For more than 90 years, Resthaven has been enriching the lives of South Australians. As the largest provider of services for older people in South Australia, people trust Resthaven to support both their own aged care needs and those of their loved ones – from basic support to complex care at home, retirement living, respite, wellness and residential aged care.

Just ask Resthaven Marion Community Services client, Mrs Gloria Stephenson, 96, who has been supported to live independently by Resthaven for the past 40 years.

Joining Resthaven’s Day Therapy Service when it first opened at Marion in the early 1980s, Gloria says: “Resthaven was recommended to me by a friend. Now I recommend Resthaven to everyone!”

Over the years, Gloria has increased the level of assistance she receives from Resthaven – now attending groups at the site as well as taking advantage of in-home support.

She has enjoyed participating in groups focusing on physical and cognitive function improvements, as well as allied therapy services such as podiatry, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

She is assisted to live independently at home, with Resthaven supporting her with personal care, domestic assistance, gardening, short transport trips and occasional overnight respite stays.

“Everything that Resthaven has done for me has been marvellous,” Gloria says. “I’m very well looked after. Resthaven keeps me at home and happy.”

From November 1, 2025, the Australian Government is introducing a new home care model called Support at Home.

The new program will support older Australians to live independently at home for longer. It is designed to be more flexible, consistent and focused on the individual’s needs.

Resthaven CEO, Darren Birbeck, says Resthaven is well prepared for the changes.

“As a trusted not-for-profit provider, Resthaven is ready to deliver the new Support at Home program,” he says. “Our dedicated staff and health professionals will continue to walk alongside older South Australians, providing the right support at the right time.”

Through Support at Home, Resthaven’s trained home support workers and health professionals will continue to assist clients with:

  • allied health services;
  • nursing care;
  • shopping;
  • social activities;
  • staying healthy and active;
  • personal care;
  • reablement;
  • household tasks; and
  • home maintenance.
