For the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA), partnering with Flinders University demonstrates how a relationship between a university and an organisation can create tangible value for the organisation, its people and the wider industry.

Flinders’ Diploma in Sports Management (Cricket), delivered in partnership with SACA, has created a direct link between education and professional sport, giving SACA access to emerging talent while strengthening its workforce capability.

“For SACA, the benefits extend well beyond the classroom,” says Sam Elliott, general manager – commercial at SACA. “Students bring energy, fresh perspectives and a willingness to get involved across match days, events, community cricket programs and fan engagement initiatives, helping enhance experiences for members, participants and fans.”

The diploma has created a two-way exchange, with students gaining an understanding of how a professional sporting organisation operates while SACA benefits from new perspectives, additional capability and the opportunity to identify and nurture future talent.

“Utilising the existing expertise, combined with the strength of the SACA brand was a key motivation behind the partnership with Flinders University,” Elliott says. “We recognised the need to develop a sustainable pipeline of industry-ready talent while creating stronger connections between education and professional sport.

“The diploma wouldn’t have been possible without the brand connection that occurred as a result of Flinders University aligning with SACA as its Principal Partner. With both brands actively connected in the eyes of the public, the education pathway going to market seem to flow naturally.”

The benefits are not limited to students or future recruitment. SACA staff have embraced opportunities to mentor, coach and share their expertise, helping strengthen their own leadership capability contributing to workplace learning and development.

In this sense, the program is also an investment in SACA’s existing workforce. By bringing students into the organisation, staff have opportunities to develop their own skills as mentors and leaders while contributing to the growth of the next generation of sports professionals.

Flinders has a long history of working with partners to develop future talent while building capability within the organisation. Mentorship and leadership opportunities offer staff avenues for growth and career development fully aligned with the day-to-day demands of business.

At the heart of the Diploma in Sports Management (Cricket) is work-integrated learning, which provides a practical connection between education and industry. Diploma students complete more than 100 hours of hands-on industry experience, working directly within SACA and at Adelaide Oval.

Rather than experiencing sport management solely through theory, students are exposed to the realities of a professional sporting environment.

“The experience students receive through this program is widely regarded as best-in-class,” Elliott says. “Delivering education at Adelaide Oval plays a significant role in that success. Seeing the look on students’ faces as they learn in such an iconic sporting environment is incredibly rewarding.”

SACA’s partnership with Flinders University Flinders delivers workforce development, organisational capability and long-term growth

For SACA, this means students are not simply observing the organisation; they are contributing to its day-to-day operations while developing the practical skills and industry knowledge that better prepare them for employment.

The partnership is translating that experience into strong employment outcomes. “Of the last cohort of students to graduate, 73 per cent went on to obtain meaningful employment in the sporting industry,” Elliott says.

For SACA, the partnership demonstrates how collaboration with Flinders University can contribute to workforce development, organisational capability and long-term growth.

“I would encourage any organisation considering a partnership with Flinders University to look beyond a traditional sponsorship arrangement and focus on the broader opportunities that can be created through genuine collaboration,” Elliott says. “When organisations are aligned in their values, vision and objectives, the outcomes can be far greater than either could achieve independently.”

Flinders partnerships are built around the way industry works today. We understand the need to be responsive, flexible and focused on getting things moving. Our partnerships build lasting capability within your organisation, all the while helping shape the workforce of the future.
