The Labor party has announced its candidates in the upcoming federal election for the seats of Grey and Barker, as well as an all-female senate list.
Whyalla local Karin Bolton will contest the seat of Grey in the election on May 3, Labor senator Karen Grogan announced this morning.
The division of Grey spans from Marion Bay to Eudunda and also includes the towns of Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy, Port Pirie, Kadina, Maitland, Orroroo, Booleroo Centre, Peterborough and Burra.
Bolton is a palliative care social worker for Country Health SA who owns the Whyalla business Guided Health and Wellbeing.
Labor has been under pressure to reveal its candidate for Grey after the Whyalla Steelworks were placed into administration in February.
“It took a Labor Government in Canberra and a Labor Government in South Australia working together to secure the steelworks’ future,” said Bolton.
“I will work hard every day to make sure Grey gets its fair share. This is my home, and I want to see it thrive.”
Meanwhile, Tanunda local James Rothe has been announced as Labor’s candidate for the seat of Barker.
The 20-year-old is currently completing a Bachelor of International Relations and Political Science at Flinders University.
For the past eight months, he has also been a member of the South Australian Multicultural Commission.
“As a local, I look forward to meeting more members of our community and offering them a real choice at the next election,” said Rothe.
“I believe Labor is fighting for better outcomes, especially for young people, and for the protection of workers everywhere.”
The division of Barker spans from Morgan in the north to Port MacDonnell in the South and includes the towns of Barmera, Berri, Bordertown, Coonawarra, Keith, Kingston SE, Loxton, Lucindale, Mannum, Millicent, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge, Naracoorte, Penola, Renmark, Robe, Tailem Bend, Waikerie and parts of Nuriootpa and Tanunda.
Labor also revealed its South Australian senate ticket this morning, with Charlotte Walker and Jennifer Allison joining current senators Marielle Smith and Karen Grogan as candidates in the upcoming election.
Walker is the president of SA Young Labor, while Allison is a gymnastics coach and works for the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.
“The Albanese Labor Government is committed to building Australia’s future by delivering a stronger economy, a stronger Medicare and more help with cost-of-living relief,” said senator Penny Wong.
“We need South Australians to put Labor first in the Senate to ensure we can deliver on our commitments and stop Peter Dutton, who will cut everything except your taxes.
“Our capable and qualified senate candidates strike the right balance between experience and youth.
“All four would provide strong representation in Canberra for our South Australian community.”
