South Australian technology business REDARC Electronics and the National Wine Centre have tied for the Employer of the Year Award at the International Student of the Year Awards.

The ceremony, held on Friday, celebrated international students and graduates of Adelaide, acknowledging their academic excellence, community engagement, and peer support.

Its employer of the year award scrutinises businesses nominated by an international student or graduate, and recognises those businesses in South Australia that employ international students or graduates in casual, part-time or full-time employment.

REDARC was nominated for the award by Shlok Shetty, an Adelaide University student from India, who is employed in their Procurement and Supply Chain team.

“My professional journey in Australia has given me the opportunity to connect what I study in the classroom with how businesses operate in the real world,” Shetty explained.

He said that working at REDARC “has allowed me to gain practical Australian industry experience while applying what I learn through my studies, making my academic and professional journey feel connected and purposeful”.

REDARC Managing Director Anthony Kittel highlighted the value of employing international students.

“We’ve always believed that if you want to build world-class products, you need great people, and international students bring valuable skills and a global perspective,” he said.

The National Wine Centre was nominated by Adelaide University student Xinran Shi, who works front of house at the Wine Bar.

“Diversity is valued and celebrated within the organisation, which contributes to a positive workplace culture and enhances the experience of both employees and guests,” Shi said about working within the landmark Adelaide venue.

National Wine Centre’s general manager Simon Burgess said international students “bring diversity, fresh perspectives and a genuine work ethic that enrich our team and we are proud to give students a place to build their skills, confidence and careers”.

StudyAdelaide Chief Executive Jane Johnston welcomed news that the two organisations, which “advocate for international student talent”, had received the award.

“Hiring an international student is easy and I encourage employers to follow their lead and tap into the skills brought by bringing an international student into their business,” she added.

The awards ceremony took place a week after new restrictions on international student visas took effect on October 2.

International student enrolments are declining across South Australia, according to the ABS, but Flinders University bucked the trend with enrolments increasing.

InDaily revealed in June that Adelaide University faced a projected $90 million shortfall due to student enrolments dropping, the university seeing about 16,600 international students – short of its target of 20,000.
