New Tasting Australia festival curator and wine expert Rebecca Hopkins reveals what drives her – and her favourite bar in South Australia.
What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
Waking up beachside in late spring, in a great house with an ocean view and tons of natural light. A little outdoor morning yoga. Then poached eggs on sourdough, and endless pots of orange pekoe tea. Head to the Adelaide Hills for a hike. And then back for late afternoon seafood and wine with friends and family at Pearl. Then a beach walk before supper at The Salopian Inn.
What is a wonderful moment of kindness you’ve experienced?
So many, every day. The kind soul who helps me put my bag in the overhead locker. The cute latte art on my flat white. The smile from a stranger sitting on the park bench. Moments of kindness are everywhere if we’re open to seeing them in the small things.
What is your favourite photograph?
THIS is my all-time favourite photo. It’s my grandmother, Veronica (von) Reid. She was a cabaret singer in Adelaide in the 1960s, and this was her publicity photo. Her father (my great grandfather) was a vaudevillian, MC, and was Flatfoot the clown on Channel 7!

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
One of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado’s magnificent black and white images from his Genesis series. The scale, complexity and humanity of his work are arresting.
Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?
A couple of magnums of Deviation Road Loftier LD, two BIG bags of potato chips, and car rides for my family to share the fun.
Bar or restaurant recommendation?
Tread Lightly in Willunga. Will and Trina are doing a GREAT job. Coffee at Lucia’s in the market, always.
What was the last film or TV show you watched?
Your Friends & Neighbors. It takes me back to living in the US – but at a very different budget.
Favourite way to unwind?
Vegetable gardening – seeding, planting, weeding. Randomly, I LOVE gardening in the rain.
Last book you read?
I’m actually working on someone’s manuscript, so I’ve read THEIR book three times this month! But for my own pleasure, I have two books on the go: She Who Tastes, Knows by Durkhanai Ayubi, and Why We Garden by Hannah Moloney.
Last song you listened to?
Let My People Go by Darondo.
