Sarra Tzijan’s best life
Port Willunga sculpture artist Sarra Tzijan reveals her favourite moments – and Fleurieu Peninsula gems.
What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
Starts with yoga. Breakfast with the family and coffee in the garden. I love waking up to the sun coming in through the windows, in summer when the nights never really cool down. A walk down to the beach and definitely a swim. Probably a picnic. Some solo time in the studio, drawing or sculpting.
It would end with a delicious dinner outside with people I love, music playing, watching the colours change and the birds fly between the trees.
What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?
Recently, when my daughter was sick, we were having a really tough time and my family all stepped in to help clean the house and make us dinner while we focused on caring for her. Having someone else do all your washing or make you chicken biryani feels very lovely.
What is your favourite photograph?
This photo was taken in the Macdonnell Ranges, near Mparntwe/Alice Springs, which was our first home as a family. It shows just a snippet of the magic of that place. It has such incredible power and energy and I am so grateful for the time I spent there.
If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
Hard question! At the moment I would say, a weaving from Bula’Bula Arts, a barramundi or a turtle. I spent a little bit of time there working at the Art Centre and I am in awe of how those women work.
Top restaurant recommendation?
Mmm around me it would be Fall From Grace in Aldinga, Or Kiin if we’re talking Adelaide CBD.
Fall From Grace is a lovely vibe in summer. They always have interesting wines, lots of local stuff. Their pizzas (Friday nights) are also delicious!
Kiin is where I dined on my “due date” and I fit as much as possible into whatever space I had left in my body. The food was really memorable.
What was the last film or TV show you watched?
Ha, well I have a toddler so I rarely watch things! BUT… when I do have a moment, my partner and I have started watching The Bear, which I really like. The characters are like real people so it feels like I’m just watching a good story, not a show.
Last book you read?
That would be Little Rabbit and the Moon, one of my daughter’s favourite bedtime books, about a rabbit who does’t want to sleep and goes on an adventure.
Last song you listened to?
Black Crow by Waka Waak Djungi, from the album Waak Waak Ga Min Min. Which I still think is one of the best albums I’ve heard.
Sarra Tzijan has been selected as the next recipient of Country Arts SA‘s prestigious Grindell’s Hut Artist Residency in the Flinders Ranges.
