Hilary Kleinig’s best life

Jun 12, 2026, updated Jun 12, 2026

Cellist, composer and creative producer Hilary Kleinig has performed with artists including Zephyr Quartet, Sia, Jóhann Jóhannsson and many more – and is behind The Art of Listening at this year’s Illuminate festival.

What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
A jog along Karrawirra Parri, then muesli, fruit and black coffee for breakfast. Pottering and gardening at home, playing my cello, a walk in the bush or on the beach with my family and dog, dinner with family and friends, good food, wine and conversation. Reading a good book before bed.

What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?
My mum is always so kind. She is in her 80s and still seeks to “look after me”, offering to help and do things for me. I feel like it should be the other way ’round!

What is your favourite photograph?
Tasman Island. I recently did the Three Capes walk with my family and friends. It was so stunning! The rock formations, sky, clouds, space, colours, wildness of it all!

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
A large, colourful painting from APY Art Centre Collective.

Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?
A weekend away in McLaren Vale.

A restaurant in SA you’d recommend?
I love Wasai Japanese on Field St in the city – always yummy and good value!

What was the last film or TV show you watched?
Haha! Guilty pleasure admission: Emily in Paris.

Favourite way to unwind?
Waking in nature.

Last book you read?
Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. It’s beautiful and I can recommend it but be careful – It made me weep, quite embarrassingly recently when I was on a plane!

Last song you listened to?
Ghosts by Hania Rani.

Tell us about your performance at Illuminate?
Ten years in the making, The Lost Art of Listening explores how people listen to music, each other and the world in an age of 24-hour connectedness and distraction. Featuring pianist Erik Griswold, it invites people to download the LISTEN app to allow their phone to play a part in the performance. The spatially and rhythmically controlled smartphone choir parts create an in-sync, low-fi, surround-sound, multi-channel speaker system that blends sounds from around the world, vintage synths and electobeats together with the live piano.
