Illuminate Adelaide co-founder and creative director, Lee Cumberlidge, shares his great loves of life and Adelaide ahead of the winter festival.
What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
A perfect day for me at the moment starts with a mountain bike ride on the trails in the Adelaide Foothills behind my house. After that, a trip down to the Fleurieu for swimming at Second Valley, followed by a wine tasting in McLaren Vale, and dinner at the Salopian Inn.
What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?
Each week, when I visit my dad in residential care, I marvel at the kindness of the people who care for the elderly every day. They go above and beyond with constant kindness.

What is your favourite photograph?
This image is from a recent scouting expedition to Europe for Illuminate. It is a new artwork by artist Amelia Kosminsky in the cloisters of the Durham Cathedral in England. Amelia is one of the artists who will be featured in Night Visions in the Adelaide Botanic Garden.
If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
At the moment, I am obsessed with Miguel Chevalier, who is our 2026 Illuminate Artist in Residence. He makes vibrant prints in collaboration with robotics which will be part of the exhibition Digital Abyss at ILA . I am hoping he will let me buy one!
Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?
I think I would buy some new headphones – listening to music is a big part of my life (and work).
A bar in SA you’d recommend …
Sodewa Saké Bar on Pirie Street is the best Japanese dining in Adelaide! And the saké selection is second to none.
What was the last film/tv show you watched?
The Pitt – never thought I would like a hospital drama, but I am hooked.
Favourite way to unwind …
An Infrared Sauna and a plunge in the unheated pool.
Last book you read …
Juice by Tim Winton.
Illuminate Adelaide runs throughout the city from July 1 to 19.
