In the Adelaide Hills, where small town centres and their surrounds pay homage to years gone by, this unique architectural marvel goes against the grain.

Industrial, curved concrete poses a striking contrast to serene surrounds of rolling hills and the soft sounds of nature.

“I’ve always liked the more modern, contemporary designs,” says Duncan, a sports physician.

“It’s got a lovely kind of moody feel to the house with all of the dark stone.

“It felt very unique, especially the architecture. It’s got lots of unique little spaces, both indoor and out.”

This Heathfield home received the Architectural Award from the South Australia Institute of Architects in 2018 in the new home category.

The dark and moody interiors are highlighted by high end features throughout the home including arabescato marble bench tops in the kitchen, Minarto bookleaf slate in the living room, a tinted mirror feature wall in the main bedroom and polished concrete floors.

“It’s definitely not a house that was built cheaply,” Duncan says.

Needing to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, the rolling hills of Heathfield and the local wildlife had all the makings of the hill change Duncan and his wife Nicole, along with their two samoyeds, were in search of.

“I was definitely looking for a bit of a lifestyle change.

“Life gets busy and we get inundated with people and noise, so it was a lovely hill change.

“From the property, you can’t really see anyone or hear anyone, so the only noise you really get is the koalas and invading kangaroos.”

While the contemporary interiors and the industrial exterior juxtaposes the natural surrounds of the more than two-and-a-half-hectare property, Duncan says the connection to nature is strong.

“When you walk in through the main entrance, it just opens out and you see the giant windows and all of the trees beyond them.

“You feel like, even in the middle of winter, you can have all of that mist in the hills, but it still feels very cosy and warm.

“I think while some of these types of houses can feel very cold and off-putting in some ways, but it works really nicely here.

“We’re kind of nestled away, so it’s not a hilltop house, but because it’s a rolling property you get the view looking down

“So, you can see the forest down beneath you with the trees and the kangaroos and the koalas.”

The outdoors features a swimming pool, tennis court, cold plunge and an external pool house with an outdoor entertaining area, a sauna and a shower and change room.

“It’s been a great house for entertaining.”

“It’s a bit of a wellness retreat, and it could be converted into something like a high-end, boutique place to stay.

“It’s got lots of possibilities to do something like that if someone wanted to. It’s very much got a wellness retreat vibe to it.

Duncan says he will miss the tranquillity the most.

“I think most of us spend all day in front of the computer or talking to people. It’s just a nice refresh to drive up the hill, you’ve got space, it’s quiet.

“It’s been a really nice balance with business and work requirements.”

Duncan and Nicole are now looking to downsize as they look towards focusing less on work and more on travel.

“It’s a place that needs lots of love and needs to be used to make the most out of it.”

The sale of 14 Williams Road, Heathfield, is being handled by Grant Giordano and Jacqui Ilicic of Giordano & Partners.
