A Code Blue extreme winter weather response for people sleeping rough has been activated today, the state government has announced.

The activation covers the whole state and provides extra support for those experiencing homelessness.

Those sleeping rough have been encouraged to call Homelessness Connect SA on 1800 003 308 to find out what support might be available.

Statewide supports provided by homelessness services may include increased daytime operation hours, extended street outreach, increased promotion of existing services, practical aid (clothing, water, food and blankets) and safe places to seek refuge from extreme weather during the day.

Overnight accommodation shelter may be available depending on the region one is in.

The Code Blue is active until 10 am tomorrow, Friday July 3.

“We know cold weather creates serious risks for people sleeping rough. This activation is about giving people somewhere warm and safe to stay, along with the practical support they need during the most severe conditions,” Human Services Minister Katrine Hildyard said.

“Our focus is on making sure vulnerable South Australians are not left more exposed during winter weather. Code Blue ensures additional outreach, support and emergency accommodation are in place for people without a safe place to sleep.

“This is about providing more support to the people who need us most.”
