An impressive aurora australis on Tuesday night lit up Australian skies and Peter Mourtzios chased down a perfect viewing spot on Silver Sands Beach near Aldinga.

The amateur photographer said he “got lucky” last night after being drawn to the spectacular event after taking his first shots of a similar light show in May last year.

He tried again when another opportunity arose a few months ago, travelling all the way to Victor Harbor.

“But I wasn’t so lucky that time it was a bit cloudy,” he said.

On Tuesday night, after seeing an app and the BOM website suggesting there was “a 10 per cent chance” of seeing another aurora, Peter set off from Glenside in search of a glimpse

He made it to Silver Sands where alongside around 20 other people, Peter watched the spectacular light show seen in many parts of Australia, caused by a severe solar storm hitting the Earth.

People have reported the phenomenon across Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.

“It was probably the best I’ve seen,” Mourtzios said.
