The Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Mount Barker opens today, and is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the Mount Barker District Council, costing $52 million.

The facility is co-funded by the Australian Government, the state government and the Mount Barker District Council.

Federal Member for Mayo, Rebekha Sharkie, acknowledged and thanked the Federal Government for its $15 million commitment to the pool.

“This commitment was made more than six years ago and it’s rewarding to now see the centre being enjoyed by so many people,” Sharpie said.

“Both from a recreational and health perspective, this pool is an incredibly significant asset to our community.”

The centre was officially opened by the South Australian Recreation, Sport and Racing Minister Emily Bourke.

Bourke said the government “recognises the growth of the Adelaide Hills region, and is supporting the infrastructure and facilities needed for the community”.

“This partnership continues to transform the precinct and has delivered a regional aquatic centre for current and future generations,” she said.

“A purpose-built centre, equipped with modern and inclusive features, enables South Australians of all ages and abilities to come together and lead healthy and active lives.”

The facility has multiple accessibility features including pools with ramps, wide concourses, and multiple disabled change areas.

As part of the Accessible Australia initiative, a designated change room is located in the warm water therapy pool hall to give people with disabilities and complex needs access to safe, suitable, and specialised bathroom facilities.

Human Services Minister Nat Cook said the State Government was working with councils to deliver the 2025-2029 State Disability Inclusion Plan’s commitment to accessible public spaces for all.

“Disability is defined by the barriers to inclusion and participation, not by the person,” Cook said.

“Inclusive facilities like this strengthen communities and help more people connect with programs, activities and social opportunities.”

The Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre is also one of the most environmentally advanced aquatic centres in regional Australia. Designed to be sustainable, the facility incorporates water reuse systems, all-electric heat pumps, and rooftop solar.

The centre features a 25-meter indoor pool, a pool dedicated for those leaning to swim, a warm water program pool, a splash play area, and multiple community meeting rooms, gym and group fitness spaces, and a café.

Mount Barker District Council Mayor David Leach said the space was designed with a growing community in mind.

“[The Facility] offers something for everyone – from children learning to swim, to seniors enjoying warm water therapy, to families spending time together. It’s a game-changer for the region,” said Leach.

The Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre is open to the public and features multiple programs, including fitness and group exercise activities, and swimming lessons.
