Shoppers in the dark during lunchtime rush
A power outage in Adelaide’s premier shopping district has forced shops to shut their doors during today’s busy lunch rush.
Major retailers in the CBD have been forced to close early following a “cable fault” related power outage in Grenfell Street and Rundle Mall.
More than 481 customers were affected by the outage in the city just before midday, an SA Power Networks spokesperson confirmed.
It is the second power outage in as many weeks after the Coromandel Place substation in the Adelaide CBD was flooded last month. The July outage saw more than 1200 city properties lose power, with several sites remaining without power for more than 24 hours.
“Although this outage is a short distance from the water-affected Coromandel Place substation, today’s issue is not related to that site,” the spokesperson said.
“Crews investigating today’s outage found a cable fault in Grenfell Street. Power was restored to all customers by 1:15pm. The cause of the fault is not yet known.”

The Apple Store, Kmart, Cotton On and The Body Shop were among the shops affected by the outage, while shoppers were turned away from Rundle Place, which houses Coles supermarket and restaurants, after escalators were brought to a standstill.
Adelaide Coffee Bar on Grenfell Street was also forced to shut its doors early after being affected by the outage.
“Unfortunately, Grenfell Street has been hit with another power outage, which means we’ll be closed for the rest of today,” Adelaide Coffee Bar said in a post to Facebook.
“Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you for bearing with us. See you tomorrow (hopefully)”
