BDO welcomes new partner to Adelaide office

Audit and accounting organisation BDO has appointed Matthew Fregona as a partner in its Adelaide office.

Fregona has more than 15 years of experience in tax advisory, tax governance, and regulatory engagement across large corporate and mid-market businesses.

He joins BDO from mining company Santos, where he held a role as senior tax adviser for more than three years, supporting the organisation through ATO reviews and complex tax matters.

Fregona specialises in advising large corporates on complex tax matters, holding roles as a senior tax analyst at OZ Minerals and a senior tax adviser at KPMG Australia.

“Matthew’s strong connections within the Adelaide corporate market, along with his deep sector expertise in energy and resources, will further enhance our ability to support clients navigating increasingly complex tax and regulatory landscapes,” BDO Adelaide office managing partner Rudy Pieck said.

Former BHP leader appointed CEO of mining company

Scott Lowe has been appointed to the roles of CEO and managing director at Australian iron ore company Magnetite Mines.

Lowe has more than 35 years of experience in major global mining and steel businesses, where he recently held the role of CEO at Mineral Commodities.

Before that, Lowe has held multiple senior executive positions across mining operations and project development at ASX-listed resource companies, including at BHP, South32, ArcelorMittal and Peabody.

He brings extensive experience in capital raising, stakeholder engagement and advancing resource projects as the company looks to progress its Razorback Iron Ore Project.

“We are pleased to welcome Scott Lowe as CEO. Scott brings strong capital markets, operational and strategic experience that is well-aligned with the company’s immediate funding priorities and its next phase of development,” Magnetite Mines board chair Paul White said.

CEO to lead software company

Adelaide-headquartered software company Prophecy International has appointed Jonathan Drake as its new CEO to take over on July 6.

Drake has more than 18 years of management experience as a business-to-business software executive, with a focus on enterprise software, corporate strategy and financial performance.

He was previously at artificial intelligence company Complexica, where he served as co-CEO and company secretary, having also held the role of chief financial officer.

Before that, Drake spent 14 years at Adelaide-headquartered software company Petrosys as group chief financial officer, where he played a major role in deploying capital for the inorganic growth of Petrosys and its portfolio of companies.

“Jonathan is a standout executive with a rare combination of deep software industry expertise, financial and commercial acumen, and a demonstrated ability to scale and strengthen enterprise technology businesses,” Prophecy chair Ed Reynolds said.

Chief operating officer joins training centre

Rick Simunsen has been appointed as the new chief operating officer for the Adelaide Training and Employment Centre (ATEC).

Simunsen has more than 15 years of experience at ATEC, where he has held several senior roles, including Registered Training Organisation (RTO) operations manager and school services supervisor.

In his new role, Simunsen will oversee ATEC’s RTO compliance and IT functions, helping to strengthen and optimise the company’s performance and efficiency in the operational area.

He has also previously worked as a skilled carpenter and site supervisor and was ATEC’s construction trainer, where he mentored young tradespeople.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Rick’s calibre take on this important leadership role within the organisation,” an ATEC spokesperson said.

Experienced media professional joins SA Power

Fiona Clark has been appointed as media lead for SA Power Networks.

Clark has more than two decades of experience in the SA media industry and recently served as a senior media adviser in the Department of Health and Wellbeing and the Department for Education.

She was also an executive producer at the Nine Network in Adelaide and led a 10 Network newsroom as an executive editor.

Clark will use in-depth knowledge of the state’s political, economic, media and cultural landscape to lead the state electricity distributor’s media engagement.

“Fiona’s wealth of experience will help ensure that we can deliver the messages, and engage in the public conversations, that matter to our customers and community,” SA Power Networks CEO Andrew Bills said.

New chair of art gallery foundation

Adrian Tisato

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) has announced SA lawyer Adrian Tisato as chair of the AGSA Foundation.

In the new role, Tisato will work alongside the AGSA board and director to steer the gallery’s fundraising efforts as it looks to deliver on a five-year philanthropy plan ahead of its 150th birthday in 2031.

Tisato brings more than 25 years of experience practising commercial law, including 19 years at Griffins Lawyers and 11 years at GT Legal.

He is also a director at WRP Legal and Advisory, where he has specialised in legal and strategic advisory services to organisations dealing with government.

“Adrian Tisato brings his expertise in governance and extensive cultural knowledge to the role of Foundation Chair following many years on the Art Gallery board,” AGSA board chair Sandy Verschoor said.

Leedwell welcomes strategic adviser

Leedwell has appointed Nick Mavropsi in a strategic advisory role to drive the growth of its asset management division.

Mavropsi has extensive national experience in property management, having previously held senior leadership roles at major real estate firms.

He was formerly director of real estate management for Colliers SA, the national director of sustainability asset management services for Knight Frank, and, most recently, head of asset management services SA for Knight Frank.

In the new role, Mavropsi will work alongside partners and the asset management leadership team to support Leedwell’s expansion and build on property management frameworks.

“Nick’s appointment reflects the company’s focus on building capability, enhancing performance and ensuring its asset management platforms continues to grow with our agency businesses,” Leedwell partner Jamie Guerra said.

Board chair appointed at QuantX Labs

QuantX Labs has announced the appointment of Kim Scott as chair of the board.

In the role, Scott will assist the company as it looks to strengthen partnerships and advance its product portfolio, which spans critical infrastructure, space, defence, telecommunications and navigation systems.

Scott has more than 30 years of experience in the Australian defence sector, including a one-and-a-half-year secondment into the US Department of Defense during the First Gulf War.

He also has more than 20 years of business experience, including as a defence strategic adviser for REDARC Electronics and Codan Limited, and is chairman of PMB Defence.

“As QuantX Labs continues to execute on its commercial strategy and expand its market opportunities, we look forward to working closely with Kim to guide the company through its next stage of growth,” QuantX Labs CEO Andre Luiten said.
