When the 2025 South Australian Business Index is revealed, there will be 12 companies at the very peak of the list that have a valuation of $1 billion-plus.

It’s a sign of strength for the broader Index, the total value of which has also risen by almost $8 billion over the past year.

Last year, 11 companies had a valuation above $1 billion, but the stellar 121 per cent valuation growth of one particular SABI stalwart brings those in the exclusive club to 12.

The SABI is South Australia’s most-trusted and definitive annual ranking of private and public companies, and the latest company to crack the $1 billion-plus threshold will be unveiled by InDaily at an exclusive event on October 17. Tickets are selling fast.

While InDaily won’t reveal the makeup of the SABI ahead of the 2025 SABI Lunch, we can reveal that the total value of the top 12 companies is $49.7 billion.

This equates to more than half of the Index’s total value, but is massively boosted by the inclusion of the perennial Index leader Santos, which has a valuation of more than $24 billion.

One other publicly listed company that experienced exceptional valuation growth over the past year is tech giant Codan, which grew by 67 per cent over the past year following its $33 million acquisition of a US tech business.

“It’s great to see another South Australian company crack the $1 billion valuation mark,” HLB Mann Judd director Jake van der Hoek said.

“With 12 companies now past that milestone, it illustrates the opportunities available for businesses to succeed in South Australia.”

The Top 10 has not been immune from movements this year, with three companies rising in the ranks, while two have fallen.

There have been other shakeups in the Index, with four of the larger companies leaving the list, having been sold in the last financial year with the transactions making them ineligible for inclusion in the 2025 edition of the Index.
