This is Adelaide… 50 years of Rundle Mall
Rundle Mall turns 50 this week. To celebrate, Adelaide photographer Alex Frayne takes a look at the people who make the shopping strip come alive, including this fashionable trio.
For 50 years now, locals and visitors alike have been enjoying Rundle Mall as a pedestrian-only shopping strip, smack bang in the CBD.
The Mall is both a commercial mecca and a central meeting point for people of all stripes. Are you even from Adelaide if you’ve never arranged to meet a friend at the Mall’s Balls?
Thanks to its pedestrian-friendly nature, it has always been an easy place for young people to gather, grab a sweet drink and window shop.
And with ‘Emo Park’ just around the corner in Hindmarsh Square, you’re bound to run into an alternative-looking young person or two.
The three pictured are quintessential examples of just that.

Photographer Alex Frayne says he has been taking photos in Rundle Mall for years.
“I looked at my collection and decided on this photo as the most representative of the place,” he tells CityMag.
“A group of young people sits on one of the benches in 2021, mid Covid. The Mall has always been a place for people to express their individualism – through clothing, hair, musical ability, clowning, and shopping.
“Long may it continue!”
