As Hindley Street nears a long-awaited $50 million makeover, photographer Alex Frayne reflects on the characters he has photographed on the city strip over the years.
The city’s west end strip that has been taken over by more than its fair share of convenience stores in recent years, is getting a long-promised new look, with $50 million in state government and council funds allocated to works starting in 2028.
It hosts a colourful cast of shop and nightclub owners, night revellers and daytime coffee seekers, with photographer Alex Frayne capturing many of it’s characters over the years.
“Over many years I have been fortunate to meet many of the characters on Hindley Street and photograph them,” Frayne says.
“This one shows Tony (left) with a friend in 2019. Tony was a regular and comforting presence on the street for years, and I photographed him many times.
“In this frame I caught Tony at his most typical: well dressed, a coffee nearby and his trademark sunglasses. I reckoned we could have been in Rome in the 1970s.”
The new Hindley Street plans, announced last month by Premier Peter Malinauskas and Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith, would turn Hindley Street into a one-way traffic thoroughfare with significant upgrades to lighting and pedestrian areas.
There will be wider footpaths, new pedestrian crossings, more CCTV, new trees, and more outdoor dining options to “encourage a blend between Hindley Street’s distinctive day and nighttime economies”.
