Oscar Ellery and Hunter James Brown (aka DJ Breaking Even) are bringing back the feeling of listening to your favourite record for the first time with their hi-fi listening party Sound Parlour, featuring a curated vinyl line-up on cinema-grade Krix speakers and home-built Klipsch’s.

The inaugural event, held at Oddio on Drayton St in Brighton, will create a casual atmosphere to listen to vinyl on a state-of-the-art sound system.

The sound system consists of two of Oddio’s original Krix speakers, along with Endless Groove event organiser Nick Gencarelli’s home-made Klipsch speakers, and two subwoofers.

“It was born out of the fact that I listen to records at home and read all the credits and liner notes, and that’s one of my favourite things to do,” says Hunter.

“My partner Oscar Ellery and I were like, everyone should have the experience to do something like this, to listen to music on a really good sound system and read a good book in a space that is intended for that”.

The full vinyl line-up will include an eclectic mix of genres, including jazz, country, classic rock, and indie, and will span various decades.

“I really like to move around and genre hop,” says Hunter.

“We asked ourselves, how can we make this as varied as possible [and] approachable but a touch out of people’s comfort zones.”

The relaxed space, without the usual distractions of a club night, will elevate the ambient but powerful sound of the speakers, says Hunter.

“I was always seeing really amazing hi-fi systems put in place for dance events… but then when we listen to music in our day-to-day lives it’s on a little JBL speaker or on your phone,” he says.

“The event is about giving someone an opportunity to hear something that either they’ve heard many times, or something that they’re unfamiliar with, but hearing it through a really good sound system, which could be a really good eye-opener.”

“There’s been a few cases where I’ll hear one of my favourite records on a really good sound system and I feel like I’m listening to it for the first time.”

Accompanying the music will be pizza from Sunny’s, local wines, vintage clothes, records and more.

There will also be a Sound Parlour library of music books, games and cards to enjoy, and local art collective High Horse will be selling some of their zines, stickers and prints.

Sound Parlour will be held on Sunday the 15th of June, from 2-7pm, with free entry.
