The story of Roz Hervey’s battle with motor neurone disease touched thousands around Australia this week. Alex Frayne captured this “bittersweet” family moment on film.

The tale of Adelaide dancer and director Roz Hervey’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease and her decision to choose voluntary assisted dying hit the nation’s screens this week as part of a heart-wrenching episode of Australian Story.

It was Roz’s daughter, famed actor Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who captured footage of her mother’s final message on video as Roz was unable to do so due to motor neurone disease.

“It really was her dying wish; it was a call to arms for us to get the information out there about voluntary assisted dying,” Tilda said on the programme.

“Knowing she had the option to end it on her own terms was what gave her the ability to live her fullest life.”

Adelaide photographer Alex Frayne snapped one of the family’s last moments together on 35mm film with this photo called ‘Roz Hervey and Family, 2024’.

“I photographed Roz and her family, a bittersweet shoot from March 2024 in the Botanic Gardens,” says Alex.

“On 35mm film on a classic Adelaide arvo, it was certainly challenging, as I peered into the viewfinder with some trepidation.”
