Nova 919 breakfast presenter Andrew Hayes shares his favourite things with SALIFE ahead of co-hosting Breakthrough’s Men’s Meals and Mental Health Dinner on June 18.
What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
We would head down to the coast to Encounter Bay and spend a few hours wearing the kids out and then get some lunch in Victor Harbour or Port Elliot (always good in theory, easier said than done with three kids under seven).
What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?
Watching and admiring the way my wife raises our kids. I’m hoping to one day be as tolerant as she is – it’s a gift and no one does it better.
What is your favourite photograph?
This photograph of my family taken in Stirling at Christmas last year. It’s a happy memory with the people I love most; my wife Kara and my children Harry, Lottie and Sonny.

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
Art really isn’t my thing. I used to own a giant advertisement piece for the band The Darkness, which hung on my wall proudly, but eventually made its way into the attic and only the other day was finally ditched. It was a sad day, but for the best.
Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?
I’d give the money to my wife otherwise if I gave it to my seven-year-old he’d finally get his wish to buy a Star Wars Lego piece worth $500.
A cafe in SA you’d recommend?
Willowbend in Croydon is spectacular. They roast their beans and the food and staff are excellent. Queen Street has transformed incredibly since Covid and the whole area is always buzzing. We love getting a meal from Queen Street Café as well.
What was the last film or TV show you watched?
I just finished the latest season of Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix. I don’t watch much – Breaking Bad set the bar too high and I haven’t found anything that compares since. I was dreaming about it – it got a little out of control.
Favourite way to unwind?
Taking the kids to Willowbend for a babyccino and then maybe mum and dad can get away somewhere for the afternoon – maybe McLaren Vale and catch up. Great in theory but hasn’t happened yet.
Last book you read?
I’d love to drop the title of something incredibly intelligent, but it has been that long that I can’t even remember the last time I read a book. I’ve read plenty of kids books though and we love Guess How Much I Love You. It’s into its third round with our youngest Sonny.
Last song you listened to?
I’m going through a pretty intense Dire Straits phase at the minute. I think Mark Knopfler might be one of the most under appreciated musicians of all time.
My wife isn’t happy with sudden outbursts of singing the chorus – kids don’t approve either.
Andrew Hayes will co-host Breakthrough’s Men’s Meals and Mental Health Dinner at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, June 18.
