Baritone Nicholas Lester speaks with SALIFE ahead of State Opera South Australia’s performance of Cinderella, which is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre from May 7-16.
What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
A sleep-in and late breakfast. A long ride in the sunshine on my motorbike through some amazing sweeping roads, with pauses for good coffee along the way. Dinner with my wife including lots of fantastic fresh seafood.
What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?
When we moved from rental accommodation in London to the flat that we bought, a friend from church volunteered to help us move. He brought his Ford KA and enthusiastically filled it to the brim many times to shift our stuff (we think he might have been secretly getting commission from Ford to boost KA sales based on the space inside). It saved us significant time and cost on an already expensive process.
What is your favourite photograph?
We ate a fabulous meal at this trabocco (fishing platform) during a trip to Abruzzo, Italy. The restaurant sits out over the water and the seafood is caught fresh. This is one of many that line the coast, a fantastic experience!

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
I can’t narrow it down to one specific piece, but it would probably be something by Vermeer.
Here’s $500. What are you buying?
A really nice meal, or if you ask my family they’d probably say, “Something for your motorbike!”
A cafe or restaurant in South Australia you’d recommend?
I loved my visit to Louca’s – my aunt and uncle took me to lunch there.
Favourite way to unwind?
Watching something very funny, I’ve worked my way through a good portion of Netflix comedy.
What was the last film or TV show you watched?
Vladimir – Rachel Weisz plays a very different character to stuff I’ve seen her play previously.
Last book you read?
Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson. I took forever to finish it, but it was interesting to think about personalities and characteristics in that way.
Last song you listened to?
I’ve been listening to lots of Australian hits recently – Accidently on Kelly St by Frente was the latest.
