Winemaker Corrina Wright chats to SALIFE ahead of Tasting Australia event Buon Appetito! on May 17, where Oliver’s Taranga wines made from emerging Italian grape varieties will be matched with authentic Italian food at iconic Willunga venue, Our Place.
What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
Reading a really great book on a comfy chair on a still day in the sun on my lawn. Then deciding to whip up a yummy barbecue and invite a pile of random peeps over, who are all super up for it and are fun and conversation flows easily and there is music and cocktails and wine and ripe peaches and mulberries for dessert and the sunset is magnificent and then we light a fire and chat till the wee hours. We might even play Finska on the lawn.
What is a moment of kindness you have experienced?
Recently many friends and colleagues and the community rallied around an incredible Coonawarra wine brand Bellwether and its owner Sue Bell, whose small business has been doing it tough. I can’t imagine an SA wine industry without people like Sue in it, so witnessing the upswell of support of many buying her wine is so special.
What is your favourite photograph?
My wedding kiss with hubby Dan. A magical day with family and friends in Bali.

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
I would really love a sculpture by Silvio Apponyi or John Nelson – local SA artists who specialise in animal sculptures in both stone and bronze. Probably an owl or a tawny frogmouth. Tawny frogmouths are the BEST.
Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?
Art at the Fleurieu Arthouse.
A bar, café or restaurant in SA you’d recommend?
The Little Rickshaw, Aldinga; Our Place at Willunga Hill; The Salopian Inn, McLaren Vale; Shobosho, Adelaide; Arkhe, Norwood; Joe’s at Sabella, McLaren Vale; Maxwell, McLaren Vale… DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE there are a million more on my list.
What was the last film or TV show you watched?
Went to see the new Avatar in 4D, but had to close my eyes most of the time because the moving seats/3D viewing made me feel so carsick!
Favourite way to unwind?
Reading an excellent book. Or wandering an antique store. Or watching Bargain Hunt and Antiques Roadshow. Or heading to the beach for a walk and swim. Or listening to the white noise of my bulldog Marj snoring.
Last book you read?
Theo of Golden, Allen Levi. Magnificent and heart-warming.
Last song you listened to?
I’m in a 90s grunge rock deep dive at the moment pretending I am young again. Pearl Jam is on repeat.
McLaren Vale’s best kept secret?
The old mulberry trees that a lot of vineyard properties have on them. There is almost nothing better than perfectly ripe fresh mulberries off an ancient tree that isn’t yours.
