Hugh Sheridan’s best life

SALIFE chats with Adelaide-born talent Hugh Sheridan about his favourite things, ahead of his performance with the California Crooners Club at Adelaide Fringe.

What does your perfect day look like?

Well, my perfect day would involve waking up on my private jet with all my friends waiting on board with drinks and songs… alas that dream day is still in the works so for now…

My dream day is waking up to go for coffee and then rehearsals for my new Broadway show, in Australia or NYC. I’d want to be playing a brilliant role, maybe Frank Sinatra (they haven’t made that show yet!)

What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?

I have the most kind and generous friends. Every year, especially last year, I had no constant work. My dearest of friends from Italy, Adelaide and New York opened their homes and were so gracious, so kind and reminded me that friendship is the most important part of life.

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?

Brett Whitley, any piece but hopefully Lavender Bay 2, I saw it once in real life and felt so moved and proud to be Australian. He was a phenomenal artist, so clever with colour and so brilliant.

Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?

To be completely honest, I’d give it away. I wouldn’t waste it – I’d give it to someone who clearly needed it. Five hundred dollars is a lot of money, and I know its value. There are people who need help everywhere and $500 I didn’t have a minute ago is a gift for anyone who needs it more.

What is your favourite photograph?

I love all of Bill Henson’s work as a photographer, however, my favourite photo I’ve taken is of my late friend Imelda Blackwell, my niece Manon Lula Sheridan and my nephew Valentino Sheridan Perra, all born on the same day, the 28th of December and three of my most joyous and favourite people.

Favourite restaurant or bar?

2KW is my favourite spot to visit when I’m back in Adelaide. Drinks in the rooftop cabanas, followed by a delicious meal in the restaurant is hard to beat.

Most recent film or TV show you watched?

High Society or On The Town. It’s hard to remember, but my dad was a big fan of old MGM and the golden days of MGM shaped me as a human and artist for sure.

Favourite way to unwind?

Walking and talking with friends, dancing, a wine, watching movies… these are a few of my favourite things!

Last book you read?

I Wrote This For Attention by Lukas Gage. He’s a mate and I went to his book launch in NY. I loved how real and vulnerable he was in his first book.

Last song you listened to?

It was my family toast or Toast from my debut Christmas album The Merriest. I was explaining to a friend that I’d incorporated my favourite Christmas memories…

Or Man I Need by Olivia Dean – the song seems to follow me around – everyone plays and loves it… must be talking to me.
