Sarah is one quarter of the amazing quartet that brings us the Garden of Unearthly Delights during Adelaide Fringe. Here, she speaks to SALIFE about her favourite Adelaide things.

What does your perfect day look like?

I’m quite a fan of an early start, even if it’s just enough time to have a cup of coffee and potter about before the rest of the house is up.  A slow, home cooked breakfast ideally with a Saturday quiz or two.  Then I absolutely love a wander around town.  Whether it’s a new city I’ve never been to or one I’m very familiar with, you can always find new places to experience or ways to see things in a new light. Art galleries, a cheeky afternoon cocktail or wine and then a show.  I’d be pretty happy with that! Especially if I’m doing it all with my favourite people.

A moment of kindness you experienced?

I remember once flying with my teeny tiny baby daughter who was probably only six-months-old at the time.  She screamed for the entire 50-minute flight and as we were getting off, a man who’d been sitting behind me, stopped me and said, “I’ve been exactly where you are and you’re doing great”. Sometimes, that’s all we need to hear, right?

What is your favourite photograph?

It’s got to be from a show!  This is Blanc de Blanc in full swing – what an absolute joy to see people experience live performance together!

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?

What a tough call! I adore wandering and sitting in galleries or looking at art in unexpected places, so mostly I’d be happy for it stay where more people can enjoy it, but I do absolutely love Yayoi Kusama – how much fun would it be to have an ‘Infinity Room’ in your own home?

Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?

I’d be straight to Miss Gladys, a one-stop wonder for great clothes, shoes, and sunnies!  My go-to for some retail therapy in the madness of Fringe.

A bar, cafe or restaurant you’d recommend?

Sofia Bistro (Hutt St, Adelaide). What a gem of a place – a wonderful calm haven of a place, just five-minutes from The Garden.  Absolutely delicious food and as you would always expect from Josh Baker’s team, and great service.

What was the last film or TV show you watched?

I can’t go past Taskmaster. It’s a household favourite for all ages – always a good laugh watching wonderfully creative people do ridiculously silly things! The UK NYE’s special featured two Garden alumni, the fabulous Maisie Adams and Australia’s own incomparable Sam Campbell.

Favourite way to unwind?

Curled up with a great book!

Last book you read?

My family has adopted the Icelandic Christmas Tradition Jólabókaflóð (Yule Book Flood) where people exchange books on Christmas Eve, then spend the night reading them.  So, the pick for me this year was the Korean cult classic, Hunger, a totally fascinating and super surreal story.

Last song you listened to?

Pulp’s Disco 2000 is on high rotation at the moment.  I can’t wait to see them, hopefully twice in 2026, on the Sydney Opera House forecourt with four of my high school best friends flying in from three states, and also in Adelaide, to kick start the Adelaide Festival in style!
