With the Santos Tour Down Under hitting the streets from January 16 to 25, SALIFE chats with the assistant race director and three-time Olympian, Annette Edmondson.

What does your idea of the perfect day look like?
A sleep-in, some form of exercise and coffee with a friend or loved one, then the beach from lunch onwards on a warm day – swimming and relaxing with a book to start, then good food and cocktails into the night.

What is a wonderful moment of kindness you have experienced?
When Amy Cure and I came first and second at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2022, we walked into the food hall the next day for lunch, and the entire women’s Hockeyroos team stood up for us, in applause as we passed. We thought we were part of a small sport and that no one would recognise us. I will never forget this moment, which truly made us feel included; part of a greater team.

What is your favourite photograph?
A photo of my brothers Alex, Chris and me at my tribal-themed 21st birthday party. Alex and I travelled a lot for our cycling, so to have all of us together in one place was quite rare and special. It was a hot night and so much fun.

There is also my phone screensaver. It’s a photo I took lying in my garden, shortly after moving into a house I had bought (and rented out) five years prior. I travelled so much for my career until my late 20s, that I never felt like I had a home. This moment was grounding, and I remember being so appreciative to have my own space. It is still my screensaver today.

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be?
An original Picasso portrait, or a large Ken Done.

Here’s $500. You have to spend it in the next hour – what are you buying?
Wine from Torbreck Vintners, or a couple of nights away down at Second Valley

A bar/cafe/restaurant in SA you’d recommend?
Proof Wine Bar, Peter Rabbit Cafe, and Arkhe Restaurant.
