As the associate artistic director of the South Australian Circus Centre, Meredith Kitchen says no two days are the same. She admits she often stands on the shoulders of others – literally – as part of her role at the helm of this creative organisation.
Give us a brief insight into what you do?
As associate artistic director at the South Australian Circus Centre, no two days are the same. Some weeks are spent in the rehearsal studio alongside artistic director Joshua Hoare; other days are dedicated to supporting our Artist Development Program and working closely with teachers as they prepare for performances, including their Adelaide Fringe shows.
And then there are the spontaneous moments—like suddenly being called into the training space to fly a three-high (on lines, of course). For those unfamiliar, a three-high is when you’re standing on the shoulders of someone, who’s standing on the shoulders of someone else.
What brings you joy in life?
Watching little things grow — whether it’s a seedling, a creative idea, or a young person finding their way. I find deep joy in putting in the effort and supporting young people as they grow into themselves, regardless of whether they pursue the arts.
I’m passionate about developing artistic projects and helping shape the direction they take.
Lately, I’ve found joy in hands-on creativity — designing and building a tiny house, and planting a brand-new garden, watching it come to life. But above all, my greatest joy has been witnessing my daughter grow into a thriving, independent adult.
What is your most treasured photograph and why?
I love this photo. Who gets to do this at work?

What is the hardest lesson you’ve had to learn?
That failing sometimes is often the best thing for you. And learning, as a kid, to hold my own in dinner table debates with my father — a seasoned expert who treated every meal like a courtroom. It was intimidating, but if you were hungry debating was the price of admission to the table.
Top five songs on your play list?
I cycle through a lot of different things. This week it’s:
Leonard Cohen – Dance Me the End of Love
Chris Isaak – Wicked Game
Leonard Cohen – Everybody Knows
Nick Cave – Into my Arms
Annie Lennox – No More I Love You
My life philosophy is ….
The only thing in life you can guarantee is change. Very comforting when things are not going well and reminds you to enjoy every bit of it when they are.
