On World Mental Health Day, October 10, three-time Paralympic gold medallist Katrina Webb will host The Catalyst for Change Gala. Here she reveals what brings her joy in life.
What do you do these days?
I am the founder and director of Newday Leadership, a keynote speaker, and a facilitator. My work is shaped by my unique experiences as a gold-medal Paralympian with cerebral palsy, a physiotherapist, and a mother of three boys. I am passionate about creating inclusive, empowering spaces where people can grow and contribute positively to others. Through Newday, we deliver leadership and wellbeing programs and summits in Australia and Nepal that inspire leadership for the greater good.
Best day of your life?
The best day of my life was winning gold again at the 2004 Paralympics. I had won gold in Atlanta and then silver for eight years, so getting back to gold was an incredible moment of triumph, resilience, and gratitude.
What brings you joy?
Connection – whether with people, nature, or culture – brings me joy. I love seeing others step into their strengths, spending time outdoors, practising yoga, travelling to Nepal, enjoying a really good coffee, and sharing meaningful experiences with family, friends, and communities.
Best advice you’ve been given?
“Focus on what is strong, not what is wrong,” – therapist Lee Shuer. This is how I approach challenges, life, and leadership – celebrating strengths and possibilities rather than being defined by limitations.
Most treasured photograph?
I lost my dear mum to cancer in March 2023, and I miss her every day. This photo of just Mum and I captures the unconditional love and support that shaped who I am. Both Mum and Dad have provided such strength, wisdom, and guidance throughout my life. While Mum is no longer here, Dad continues to be a steady source of love and support, and I carry them both with me always.
Best meal you’ve ever eaten?
Sushi — fresh, simple, and perfectly balanced. It’s a meal that feels both indulgent and nourishing and always brings me a moment of joy.
But this year, I also had the most incredible lunch at Tusa in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The chefs trained in Australia and have brought their skills home, creating a modern twist on traditional Nepali recipes. Every dish was made with locally sourced ingredients, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. It wasn’t just a meal — it felt like an expression of culture, care and connection.
Best qualities of your favourite person?
Compassion, authenticity, connection, and a quiet, unwavering strength. They inspire others through how they live, not just what they say.
Top 5 songs on your playlist?
LoBa by Blick Bassy (I met him this year in Bali and absolutely love his music and what he stands for);
Mountain by Chocolate Starfish (Adam Thompson, the lead singer, is a dear friend);
Letting Go by Angie McMahon;
Greenhill by Naomi Keyte (Naomi is a local musician who was part of our Inspired Leadership Program);
Follow the Sun by Xavier Rudd
Best purchase?
My best purchase is weekly yoga and a stillness class. As I get older, I need time to connect, rest, slow down, turn off the noise, and deeply listen to what I need. It’s important to go slow to go fast.
