With the AirTouch 500 at The Bend supercars race this weekend, SALIFE speaks with 19-year-old rookie driver Kai Allen who hails from Mount Gambier and is already achieving big things in the sport.
Give us a brief insight into what you do?
I am a 19 year old professional race car driver in the Australian Supercars Championship. I am driving the #26 Penrite Ford Mustang in my rookie season.
What brings you joy?
Working towards a goal and achieving it. I am a competitive person, so being goal driven pushes me to be my best in anything I do.
Most treasured photograph?
In 2023, I won the Supercars Super2 Championship, being the youngest ever to achieve this. The photo captured after the race was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and was a very special moment for myself, my family and my supporters. To be able to carve my name into the history books of Supercars was very special and moment I will cherish forever.
Best day of your life?
Walking out of the Grove Racing office and signing my first full time contract to land my dream job racing for Penrite Racing in the 2025 Supercars Championship. This was a goal of mine I had dreamt of since I was five years old, so to finally achieve it was a significant moment in my life.
Hardest lesson you’ve had to learn?
The hardest lesson I have had to learn is how to turn a failure into a success. At the time it is devastating to fall but I have ended up learning from failure more than from success at times.
Best advice you’ve been given?
Brake late and accelerate early. It is the only way to go fast.
Best meal you’ve ever eaten?
A steak from the local steakhouse in Mount Gambier called The Barn. We would always go there for special family occasions to celebrate any major life milestones. It was also my Grandpa’s favourite place to have a nice meal. He sadly passed away a month ago, so I am looking forward to going back and having a steak for him and remembering the good times growing up.
Best purchase?
My apartment where I currently live was a huge life achievement for me and has made me grow up faster now that I have responsibility to look after myself and the place. The best thing about it is it is 100m from the Albert Park F1 track, which I dreamt about driving on growing up. Now I get to drive on it every day to work, and race on it once a year in my Supercar.
