With panoramic ocean views, a swimming pool and space for hosting guests, this luxury two-storey home abounds in lifestyle appeal with a rare aspect looking north along Adelaide’s coastline.

With their unique north-facing view that captures Adelaide’s coastline towards the city, Robert and Rosemary Patterson reckon they have the best spot on the coast.
Yet after 11 years enjoying this special location at Marino, the retirees are making the tough decision to downsize.
With the constant sound of waves lapping the shore, the sunsets, storms and sailing boats dotting the ocean, parting with the luxury home is an emotional move.
Rosemary will particularly miss admiring the view each morning.

“I have a chair that looks straight out to sea and up the coast, and I just spend my mornings sitting there drinking my coffee; that is my real pleasure for the day,” she says.
“The sky and the sunsets are always changing, and in summer it’s fantastic – there’s so much activity on the water.
“It is like being on holiday because of the location, the view and the peacefulness.”
The couple previously lived in nearby Seacliff for 46 years. After Robert retired from his career in finance, they decided to move to Marino.

“This little area here is somewhat under the radar, and houses this close to the water don’t come up very often.”
Once they did find a property, the couple enlisted Alan Sheppard Homes to design and build a new four-bedroom home which was completed in 2015.
“We wanted two storeys that capture the views on both levels, and we designed it such that we could live in the upper level – the entry level – without needing to go downstairs often, except to get wine from the wine room,” laughs Rosemary.
“I’ve always referred to it as our apartment up here.”

Set across 600 square metres, the home has been designed to maximise its elevated position, with the outlook immediately revealed upon entry and carried through the main living spaces and balcony.
“People do say ‘wow’ as they step inside. When you walk through the front door, you see the view straight away.”
The kitchen features Corian benchtops, a butler’s pantry and high-end Miele appliances complemented by two integrated Liebherr fridges, while an Escea gas fireplace and ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning provide year-round comfort.
The living and dining area opens via stacker doors to the balcony with a built-in barbecue and outdoor kitchen.

“It’s better than the esplanade as far as we’re concerned because you haven’t got the traffic or the western sun, and we have an elevated view,” Rosemary says.
“There’s so much natural light, which we love, and the view is always changing.”
The master suite is located on the upper floor, with ocean views and a large walk-in robe and ensuite with underfloor heating.
The lower floor is accessed by both lift and staircase. This floor has a wine room, kitchenette and second living area which opens to the balcony. A solar-heated swimming pool is equipped with swim jets.

The lower floor also includes three bedrooms a main bathroom and separate toilet. Two of the lower bedrooms enjoy sea views and have built-in robes.
“There’s been plenty of room downstairs for when family come to stay, with three bedrooms and a separate living area and kitchenette on that level. It has worked well.”
The nearest cafe, Nest Kiosk in Kingston Park is only a 10-minute walk along the beach. And a little further along are the Brighton and Seacliff Yacht Club, and Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club.
Also nearby are the shops and cafes of Brighton where The Esplanade Hotel is reopening after an $11.5-million-dollar refurbishment.

“I don’t know how I’ll feel walking out for the last time,” Rosemary says.
“We are going to be very sad to leave, but we can’t stay forever, and it’s just time to downsize. We’ve had 11 brilliant years here.”
The sale is being handled by Brad Allan and James Marron of Allan Real Estate.
