When co-founders of design and construction company Aube Projects Amanda and Kurt Strazdins first set foot on this vacant Stokes Bay property they knew it was the perfect location for their dream holiday home.

“The combination of the views, the surroundings and the pasture – the feel of it was amazing,” Kurt says.

“It’s also a unique block in the sense that it faces north and you get ocean views, which are in South Australia where you often have to be west-facing to get that view,” Amanda adds.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind piece of land.”

Instead of designing the home as a typical beach house, they borrowed from the rural environment, creating warmth with natural tones and materials including exposed brick timber accents.

“We wanted to build a home that was sympathetic to it’s environment,,” Amanda says.

“Even though it’s coastal, it isn’t a beach house landscape, so we have used earthy tones in the finishes to blend the home into the landscape and give it warmth.”

“We were inspired by mid the-century modern aesthetic with a nod to farmhouse design,” Kurt adds.

Creating a home that is durable and generational was at the forefront of the design both in the layout and the construction of the home.

Kurt says they wanted to create a home that would cater to multiple groups of friends and extended family – the open living, dining and kitchen flows onto the alfresco with seamless integration with the pizza oven and outdoor fireplace.

“We designed the floor plan to transition from our young family and it’s needs, through to when we are older and here on our own.” Amanda says.

“A lot of time went into the layout and how it would function.”

The home is also durable and multi-generational in its construction – built to last with a solid brick veneer and double-glazed windows and stone floors throughout.

“The home has a sense of calm, warmth and solitude, both through the idealic landscape but also the combination of natural materials throughout like timber, tumbled limestone and textured materials,” Amanda says.

Amanda and Kurt say they will both miss the memories they have created and the ability to step into the home and switch off.

“I could sit out on the alfresco all day staring out at the framed view – it is just like staring at an oil painting,” Amanda says.

“You can just sit there and watch the view and lose time,” Kurt adds.

“The reason you go to the island is to unplug.

“Whether it’s having the music going in the afternoon and watching the kids dance around, a morning coffee in the spa or a morning swim down at Stokes Bay, it’s a place to create so many memories.”

The sale of 4557 North Coast Road, Stokes Bay, is being handled by Sophie Newland of S&S Property and Projects.
