Located in the desirable eastern end of the Adelaide CBD, this two-storey Victorian villa blends old-world charm with modern amenities and urban chic interiors. This week, it could be yours.
Eighteen months ago, farmers David and Sally Carr were visiting family in Adelaide when they stumbled across a charming heritage home on Carrington Street.
Despite owning a 10,000-hectare farm in New South Wales, the couple loved the Victorian terrace so much, they decided to put in a bid.
David, a former lawyer, says they were attracted to the blend of old and new.
“What attracted us to Carrington Street was the lovely charm and the old-world feeling of it, but a modern house inside – the best of both worlds,” says David.
Another drawcard was the prime location, being just a short walk to the city centre and a stone’s throw away from the eastern parklands.
“Honestly, you feel like you’re out in the country. It’s so quiet and there’s not much traffic,” says David.
“One of my favourite walks is going down through the Botanic Garden, past the zoo and having a cup of coffee at The Lion (Hotel) before walking home again.”
Located at 411 Carrington Street, Adelaide, this three-bedroom home includes two bathrooms and space for one car.
Built in the 1880s, the Victorian terrace was restored and renovated in 2020 under the direction of heritage consultant Sandy Wilkinson.
This included restoring the bluestone façade, the latticed verandah and the lace-bound balcony.
Inside, there’s a mix of heritage and contemporary features, including wooden fireplaces, an arched hallway, soaring ceilings and oak flooring.
The open-plan living, dining and kitchen area is connected to a garden courtyard.
“It has great access to the courtyard from the family area and all the doors open out to it … we often have the doors open and sit in the back and read a book,” says David.
David and Sally agree that their favourite part of the property is the front sitting room.
“It’s really cosy. It’s not enormous and there are a couple of seats there and a gas fire. I can sit there with a book or a computer for a couple of hours – it’s just a really quaint little spot,” says David.
Although David and Sally are reluctant to sell, the couple don’t get as much use out of the house as they would like.
Add to this the recent expansion of their farm and the purchase of a terrace house in Paddington, Sydney, and David and Sally have decided it’s time to pass the keys to whoever the next custodian might be.
“I said to Sally, ‘jeez, if we could find one of these in Sydney, that’d be fantastic’. Two weeks later, we bought a fantastic old terrace home in Paddington,” says David.
David says he will miss the location and ease of access to amenities the most.
“Where else can you find a nice place like this a 15-minute walk from the (Adelaide Central) Market and right by the parklands?
“If we didn’t have such a life interstate, we could easily live there.”
The sale of 411 Carrington Street, Adelaide is being handled by Sally Cameron and James Campbell of Toop + Toop.
