Choose your fighter: J-Lo vs Djite | Supercars swerve for COP | CatVideoFest is here

This week, InSider commends two InDaily contributors for the jabs they got in over park lands and updates Adelaide’s event calendar.

J-LO vs Djite

Oops.

Seems like our friends over at InDaily caused some drama this week. Naughty!

Amid the broader skirmish that is Mali v the Parklands, a side bout has commenced between two heavy-hitting foes.

Last Thursday, InDaily published an op-ed by the head of the Property Council of Australia’s state branch Bruce Djite.

In it, he called for a “serious review of the Adelaide City Council” and argued it was a barrier to progress.

“In 2025, it’s time to acknowledge what many residents, businesses, and even state officials have been whispering for years: the Adelaide City Council is no longer fit for purpose in its current form,” he wrote.

“A comprehensive review – and potentially a major overhaul – of the Council is urgently needed. The state government must step in and explore significant changes to how the heart of our capital is governed.”

InDaily being the balanced publication it is, then accepted an op-ed from none other than the Lord Mayor of the very body Djite was criticising.

Dr Jane Lomax-Smith didn’t hold back and hit Djite with a couple of big punches of her own.

“I have heard it said that the least relevant council in South Australia is in fact the Property Council,” she wrote.

“But if, under Bruce’s leadership, they no longer see value in what we offer, and no longer represent us, that’s a membership fee we might save and spend on the Park Lands.”

Ouch.

To rub salt in the wound, the Mayor then spent the Monday and Tuesday after publishing on a bit of a high online, posting a reel calling Bruce her ‘friend’ and exploring some of the park lands that were under Bruce’s microscope. It’s since been deleted – audio issues, apparently.

Drama-loving InSider has to admit it is pretty proud of its friends at InDaily for stirring the pot. It’s InSider’s favourite pastime, after all.

Things calmed down for the Mayor during the week. She ended up chilling out in a library, and visited Night Visions in the Botanic Gardens.

But we can’t help but think she was disappointed that InDaily didn’t write anything about city car parks this week. Her video yesterday has her calling out some allegedly ‘fake news’ spread on the radio about car parks being removed for trees.

Sorry Jane. We’ll try and give you some more Insta fodder next week.

COP that, supercars

A few weeks ago, InSider pointed out an event calendar clash between two events that are known for putting carbon emissions on the agenda – but in very different ways.

If you don’t remember the story, hopefully this work of art will ring a bell.

Stay informed, daily

International climate conference COP31 would be the jewel in Premier Peter Malinauskas’ event policy crown, but it would clash directly with another one of his favourites: the bp Adelaide Grand Final (formerly the ADL500).

Well, this week SA Motor Sport Board boss Mark Warren told the Adelaide City Council they’d change lanes to cater to COP.

“Firstly, we’re very excited to hear the potential for COP31, from our point of view, we’ve anticipated that our dates will need to shift,” he said.

“We’re expecting that we probably won’t be at the end of November.”

When asked if the Grand Final in 2026 will go ahead, Warren said “at this stage, yes”.

We still don’t know if Adelaide has secured COP, because our rival Türkiye is yet to pull out of the race.

The Premier previously said that the government “hope and anticipate” Türkiye will concede ahead of a vote so that the city has more time to prepare (preparations that have already earned a preliminary price tag of $8 million in the state budget).

If Türkiye doesn’t pull out, the vote will take place at the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil, and we won’t know until November 2025 –  around about the same time those supercars will be running laps through the CBD, and this year with an extra race on the schedule.

The irony was not lost on Deputy Lord Mayor Phillip Martin, who pointed out “world bodies meet to consider whether the conference to consider carbon emissions is held in the City of Adelaide, as we celebrate with the one of the world’s biggest carbon emission events”.

Marin also brought sponsorship into it, as this year’s major sponsor is oil and gas heavyweight British Petroleum.

Bp is lesser known for being the company that popularised the phrase “carbon footprint” and unveiled a carbon calculator for the public – how thoughtful of them!

Feel-good Friday

If there is one thing that has withstood the test of time in uniting the internet, it’s the humble cat video.

From Grumpy Cat to Nyan Cat, to cats scared by cucumbers, the category has endless potential for virality. But have you ever seen a cat video so endearing that you’ve thought seeing it on your phone screen doesn’t do it justice? Well have we found the event for you.

You can see a curation of the latest and best cat videos on the big screen this August at Goodwood’s Capri Theatre, all while supporting a worthy cause – SA Cat Rescue.

CatVideoFest provides a 75-minute reel of feline feel-good vibes “culled from countless hours of unique submissions and sourced animations, music videos, and classic internet powerhouses”.
